The University of Maryland Medical Center’s (UMMC) Division of Transplantation has a reputation for compassionate care, innovative techniques and surgical excellence.  The UMMC HLA / Immunology Laboratory is the provider of histocompatibility testing for UMMC kidney, pancreas, liver, heart, lung and stem cell transplant programs.  

As a member of the HLA / Immunology team, the Clinical Laboratory Technical Specialist is responsible for directly assisting in oversight of daily laboratory operations, new test development and implementation, and technologist training.  HLA tests include bead based antibody analysis,  DNA-based molecular typing (SSOP and NGS), and flow cytometric crossmatching for the evaluation of solid organ and stem cell transplant patients and their prospective donors.  The Technical Specialist reviews the accuracy of laboratory test results performed by technologists; creates test reports; maintain supply inventories; act as a technical resource for the local deceased donor organ procurement organization; train staff in testing and related laboratory procedures, and perform supervisory functions as delegated by the laboratory supervisor.  The Technical Specialist participates in rotating on-call administrative duties for urgent deceased donor compatibility testing for the solid organ transplant programs.

Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary in order to perform your daily tasks efficiently.  The Technical Specialist position requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.  The successful candidate must be able to work in a highly technical, precise environment.  A strong initiative and supervisory skills are highly desired and are a requirement to succeed in the laboratory. 

Qualified candidates must have a Bachelor degree in Science, or other related field.  A minimum of five years of experience in histocompatibility testing, and an American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS) certification is required.
