This Scientist position, within Applications R&D team, will leverage their scientific training and industrial experience to support and develop protein (animal and plant) product opportunities as well as support the complementary nutritional applications. This position is expected to take on projects with significant technical challenges. Ability to work cross-functionally to determine goals and timetables for projects; ensure diligence in development, scale up, and commercialization of products; to drive innovation, novel applications and deliver on business goals is required.

  • Develop technical application data to support commercial/regulatory strategy for the business
  • Communicate effectively the functionality and technical benefits of Balchem ingredients in support of defined commercial strategy
  • Stay current with new technology and developments and maintain professional contacts with individuals and organizations; Build and maintain relationships with current and potential customers
  • Experience in translating unmet consumer needs with commercial objectives into science and technology strategies and plans
  • Perform tests on new samples produced in the pilot plant to evaluate actual results compared to predicted results; Complete formulation and application testing in the lab
  • Perform tests on current production materials as required by customer requests or assist Quality with evaluation of product complaints
  • Provide technical support to the sales organization, customers, and prospective customers as required
  • Maintain accurate files of all R&D work completed; Provide written and/or oral reports on assignment/projects status and complete weekly updates in Salesforce and communicate project status to Management
  • Collaborative skills allowing effective interactions with Marketing teams, Operations and Manufacturing Teams, Quality and Regulatory Compliance Teams and Senior Management
  • Carry out sensory analysis, physical testing and other methodology to fully test products
  • Technical validation of Balchem technology and products; Design and conduct appropriate qualitative and analytical evaluations of products
  • Design and develop new applications for all Balchem product lines as requested
  • Maintain integrity of R&D laboratory environment through accurate test design and set up, good sanitary practices and maintenance of equipment in good working order


  • Bachelor's Degree in Food Science or Chemistry, or related fields plus 5+ years of applicable work experience, or master's degree plus 3+ years of applicable work experience
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in meat science industry is required
  • Support and develop new protein (animal and plant) product opportunities as well as the complementary nutritional applications
  • In-depth knowledge of meat product manufactured and raw material components, as well as understanding of variability during production and impact to consumer acceptance
  • A solid track record of successful new technology development, new product innovation, and commercializing of new products
  • Advanced problem solving and evaluation capabilities
  • Computer skills including Excel, Word, and product formulation software tools required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Follows all safety policies and procedures including use of safety equipment (PPE) and equipment safeguards
  • Attend and support trade shows, sales calls, demonstrations, etc., as needed to support the business
