Transportation Inspection Team Lead

The Transportation Inspection Team Lead plans, schedules, coordinates and/or supervises field construction activities on assigned road construction projects. Must maintain positive working relationships with project engineers, contractors, subconsultants, City/County, and KDOT or FHWA staff. Must adhere to quality assurance and safety standards and ensure that schedules and budgets are met. Required to maintain accurate progress reports in accordance with project requirements. Will provide inspection of construction activity to ensure the quality of construction and compliance with project plans, contracts, specifications, and special provisions.


  • Current Professional Engineer license desirable but not required.
  • Proficiency with the KDOT CMS project documentation process from project initiation to closeout.
  • Basic knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices and methods as applicable to a municipal setting; working knowledge of applicable laws, standards and regulations relating to construction, inspection, safety and traffic control; considerable knowledge of public works inspection methods.
  • Considerable skill in reading and interpreting construction drawings, plans, specifications and contract documents; skill in applying material testing procedures.
  • Ability to prepare, organize and maintain inspection field and office data, reports and systems.
  • Ability to perform required mathematical computations.
  • Ability to effectively interact and communicate complex technical information, orally and in writing, in a professional manner to contractors, developers, property owners, employees, consultants, other governmental agency representatives, City officials, public, and Project Engineer.
  • Obtain and maintain required KDOT CITT certifications for position.
  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade 1 certification is preferred but not required
  • Radiation Safety Training
  • Construction materials (soils, aggregates, PCC, ACC) testing experience helpful.
  • Advanced experience with MS Offices products with skills to create documents for word processing, databases, and spreadsheets.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Minimum 10 years broad experience in construction of transportation projects required.
  • Must possess a demonstrated ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines and maintain attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Must possess the ability to manage a staff and direct their efficient utilization on projects.
  • Must meet internal requirements for operation of company vehicles throughout duration of employment and must maintain a valid driver's license and insurable driving record.
  • Must be willing and able to travel to job sites, sometimes for extended periods. Job sites may be located throughout Kansas or adjacent states.


  • Ability to operate personal computer, including Bluebeam Revu PDF technology and Microsoft Office products, specifically word processing, spreadsheet, and data base software.
  • Experience in operating tape measure, pressure gauges, testing equipment, engineering calculator, motor vehicle, and smartphone sufficient to perform job duties.
