Overview
Responding to the healing mission of Jesus and the tradition of Catherine McAuley to serve the poor and sick person, we participate in meeting the health needs of the community. Pastoral Services assists the patient, family, and personnel in meeting their spiritual, social, and emotional needs during a time of illness, injury or stress and will minister to all persons, regardless of their belief system.

 

Responsibilities
Services
Assesses need and provides spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and staff.
Deals with trauma, crisis, and complex critical patients of all ages on a regular basis, effectively
managing multiple priorities
Plans, implements, and assists in religious and spiritual events that connect faith communities and other
community services to the medical facilities
Assists visiting clergy.
Develops specialized pastoral services for specific area of assignment

Team Work
Maintains open and effective communication with physicians, nursing services, families, and staff for
patient care; attends appropriate care team meetings.
Support departmental, local/organizational, and ministry-wide goals and objectives by participating in
quality improvement
Performs other duties as assigned

Staff Responsibilities
Maintains appropriate records of pastoral services for accountability, productive and recognition of
trends and changing pastoral needs.
Respects and provides confidentiality demanded by the role
Demonstrates flexibility in adjusting work and schedule, when needed, to meet changing departmental needs
Represent the department in a professional manner when interacting with the community
Is a teaching resource in formal and informal situations about spirituality, spiritual needs, of patients and
families and the connection between spirituality and health outcomes
Assists with debriefing/support with staff after major event

Personal Responsibility
Fosters a spirit of freedom and ecumenical climate
Plans, organizes and evaluates work activities appropriately; works efficiently and quickly, producing
high quality work
Supports and complies with policies and procedures of the Department
Communicates orally and in writing via a concise, effective, friendly, helpful and appropriate manner with
peers, all hospital personnel and general public.
Responsible for personal, spiritual and professional growth, including continuing education requirements
for maintaining Board Certification


Qualifications:

  • Education: Completed Masters-level work in Theology, Ministry, Counseling, Divinity or related field Four units of CPE recognized by Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) or National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC)
    Experience: One year of health care chaplaincy experience (may include CPE experience)
    Certifications: Eligible for certification or in process to become Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) by APC or NACC
    Other: Compassion and respect the dignity of each person regardless of their cultural, religious, lifestyle choices or age Good communication and listening skills and able to be present to others Ability to minister to the whole person with an emphasis on the spiritual Ability to be self-reflective about work Responds with respect, graciousness, kindness and spiritual comfort Ability to work independently in the context of a strong pastoral team and in cooperation with the interdisciplinary clinical team to provide quality services resulting in high patient satisfaction. Able to work in emotional and stressful situations Advocates for patient, family member or co-worker when the need arises Uses computer systems, pagers, and telephone systems effectively Ability to work in crisis and trauma situations and with multiple priorities Able to be a self-starter, work with high degree of initiative, but also participate in teams within and beyond the department.
    Preferred Education: Masters in Theology, Ministry, Counseling, Divinity or related field (as required for certification) Four units of CPE (as required for certification)  
    Preferred Experience: Depending on local needs, any of the following could be preferred for a Board Certified Chaplain; Experience with speciality area Three (3) years of chaplain experience Mentored other chaplains Presenting to physicians/other clinicians
    Preferred Certifications: Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) by APC or NACC
    Preferred Other: Where needed, language skills or experience with specific patient groups served
