ROLE/TITLE: Machinist I (Toolmaker)

REPORTS TO: R&D Supervisor

SHIFT SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday 6:00am-2:30pm, weekends and overtime as needed based on departmental demands.

POSITION SUMMARY: Analyze specifications, lay out metal stock, set up and operate machine tools, and fit and assemble parts to make and repair dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and machinists' hand tools all while upholding the integrity of Wood-Mizer’s core values.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS OF JOB:

  • Read prints and produce prototype parts and assemblies from prints or sketches
  • Develop, construct, and alter a wide variety of jigs, fixtures, and gauges
  • Perform assignments that range from the use of ordinary tool room operations to work involving accurate and extremely close tolerances
  • Produce prototype units or tools to print specifications
  • Design and produce tooling from parts prints
  • Perform testing and document results
  • Operate any machine in the tool room such as mills, laths, drill presses
  • Expertly use various gauges and measuring instruments
  • Assist development engineering with process improvements
  • Working with Engineers and Technical Writers
  • Operate manual Lath and vertical mill, surface grinder and Proto Trak accurately and precisely
  • Read prints and work within tight tolerances with the ability to read measuring instruments
  • Tool room experience of at least 5 years making parts on machines as stated above
  • Maintained tools and machines and quality checking parts produced
  • Ingenuity mindset that can design and build things when job requires it
  • Assist manufacturing with process improvements

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

  • High School Education or Equivalent
  • Tool Making training through skills trade training

EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum of three years’ experience in manufacturing, prototyping or tool room environment operating Prototrak or Bridgeport Mill

• Minimum of two years’ welding experience

• Basic hydraulic and / or pneumatic system experience

SKILLS:

• Strong communications, math skills, problem solving abilities and mechanical aptitude

• Also experience with some form of CAD-CAM would be helpful

• Prototype units and fixture design utilizing manufacturing knowledge

  • Must be a team player, cooperative, good communicator, have high integrity and ability to remove obstacles that get in the way of achieving corporate goals
  • Clean work area / organized
