Patient Billing Clerk


Full time; Cooper Clinic. The Patient Billing Specialist is an essential role on the Clinic team and is responsible for gathering charge information, coding and entering into database, as well as reconciling and balancing payments.

Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Medical coding, claim processing and accounts receivable follow-up
  • ICD10 and CPT coding
  • Posts and reconciles charges, receipts, and adjustments
  • Answers telephone, questions, and requests from patients and insurance companies
  • Identifies and resolves patient billing complaints
  • Processes and mails insurance forms and patient statements
  • Assists with patient check out as necessary
  • Reviews day sheets and invokes to ensure all patients are billed
  • Answers inquiries and correspondence from patients and insurance companies
  • Processes insurance company requests for additional information
  • Follows up with insurance companies and corporate accounts to ensure claims are paid
  • Performs various collection actions, including contacting patients by phone and resubmitting claims to third party reimbursements
  • Balances and prepares daily deposit for bank pick-up
  • Processes APS requests
  • Helps in mailroom with sorting and delivering
  • Prepares next day's routing and billing slips with necessary billing information
  • EMR/RHR and electronic claim processing
  • Provides ideas and participates in the implementation of such ideas to improve quality and/or customer satisfaction, reduce costs or improve the work environment
  • Maintains positive attitude
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Minimum 2+ years' health care experience in medical coding, claim processing and accounts receivable follow-up
  • 3-5 years' medical office and/or customer service experience
  • ICD9, ICD10 and CPT coding knowledge and experience a plus
  • Experience with EMR/RHR and electronic claim processing
  • Thorough knowledge of medical office operations
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and OSHA Policies and Procedures
  • Knowledge of Microsoft applications
  • Must have exceptional time management and prioritization skills
  • Ability to work effectively and consistently with limited direct supervision
  • Excellent communication skills as this position will have direct contact with patients, physicians and staff
  • Problem solving skills and acute attention to detail and quality
  • Superior customer services skills and willingness to work in a team environment
  • Dependable and willing to cover both front and back office operations
