Job Summary The Weitzman lab is seeking a full-time research tech. The focus of the Weitzman laboratory in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Division of Protective Immunity at CHOP is to define mechanisms that comprise the complex interaction between viruses and the infected host cell.  Toward this goal, the lab utilizes a wide variety of techniques including cell culture, biochemistry, molecular biology, genome sequencing, and mass spectrometry. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to several ongoing independent research projects that address different aspects of virus infection and host defense. Projects in which the candidate participates may lead to authorship on scientific manuscripts. This position will provide a strong foundation for individuals contemplating continued training in medical or graduate schoo
  • Performs basic laboratory maintenance tasks including cleaning and autoclaving dishware, performing routine maintenance on equipment, and preparing chemical solutions for laboratory use. Also assists in cataloging and organizing laboratory chemicals, plasmids, primers, etc.
  • Ensures that laboratory supply needs are met by inventorying, ordering, and maintaining reagents and supplies.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of any protocols for laboratory safety, biosafety, etc. Ensures that all laboratory staff and trainees are up to date and compliant with training requirements or guidelines.
  • Performs research procedures on experimental samples as directed by Principle Investigator including cell culture, viral infection, PCR, isolation of nucleic acids, sequencing, and performing microscopy techniques.
  • Records and interprets results, organizes data, maintains organized laboratory notebook, and prepares short reports to be submitted to and discussed with the Principle Investigator

For more information on the Weitzman lab-

The Weitzman Lab investigates how viruses create conditions conducive to their reproduction by shaping host cell environments, particularly with regards to genome interactions. The lab discovered cellular antiviral defenses, and identified viral strategies to manipulate these host processes. The lab’s work addresses the dynamic interactions between viruses and host cells when their genomes are in conflict.

The confrontation between viral and host genomes provides a battleground that provides lessons in genome protection, and which will help guide therapeutic strategies to fight infection and cancer. The pathways illuminated are key to combatting viral infection, provide insights into fundamental processes that maintain genome instability, and have implications for developing viral vectors for gene therapy.

The Weitzman Lab investigates the interplay between viral genetic material and host defense strategies. The lab team has used proteomic approaches to probe the interactions taking place on viral and cellular genomes during infection, and have uncovered ways that viruses manipulate chromatin and DNA damage responses as they take control of cellular processes.
