The MSUAF is seeking to hire a Controller. 


The Controller of the Montana State University Alumni Foundation (“Alumni Foundation”) is the senior accounting position responsible for external financial reporting for six entities and compliance with federal/state financial requirements and regulations. The Controller establishes policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure efficiency, GAAP compliant accounting, and protection of the Alumni Foundation’s assets. This position manages one accounting staff position and reports to the Alumni Foundation’s Vice President of Finance and Accounting.


1) External financial reporting
  • Deliver on-time GAAP financial statements for five entities and the retirement plans that result in unqualified audit opinions.
  • Manage monthly/quarterly/annual close process.
  • Deliver effective and timely fund reports to campus departments/units.
  • Facilitate annual external audits for multiple entities.
2) Federal and state compliance
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state financial requirements and regulations, including IRS filings.
  • Manage external tax preparer to deliver accurate state/federal filings on-time.
3) Manage accounting and tax compliance for complex and planned gifts.   4) Establish and adhere to accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure efficiency, proper accounting, and protection of Alumni Foundation assets.   5) Effectively manage and develop one accounting staff position.   6) Other responsibilities as needed:
  • Provide accurate and timely data for internal reporting.
  • Provide materials and support for the Board and its committees.
  • Execute operational cash management transactions.
  • Prepare annual endowment spending allocation and scholarship budget.
7) Affect and maintain a professional, proactive, positive, highly collaborative, and performance-centric work environment.   Duties and responsibilities may change at any time.   SPECIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. In-depth knowledge and experience applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the Internal Revenue Code (IRC), preference for non-profit specific experience.
  2. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel as well as accounting databases.
  3. Strong people management skills with the ability to recruit, retain and develop high performing staff.
  4. Project management skills to deliver projects on time and within budget.
  5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  6. Ability to prioritize, manage multiple tasks, and work both independently and as an effective team member.
  7. High standard of professional ethics.
