    This position is located at Northern Navajo Medical Center, Professional Quality Services (PQS) Division, Shiprock, NM. The purpose of this position is to manage a program for Infection Control and prevention, through leadership, performance improvement and implementation, and technology. Incumbent report to the Director of Quality Services.

    Responsibilities

    Incumbent functions as the primary nurse for Infection Control and Prevention.
    • Responsible for performing comprehensive surveillance for healthcare-associated infections and epidemiologically. Applies epidemiologic principles and statistical methods. Conducts on-going surveillance using Center of Disease Control (CDC) infection criteria, documentation, and investigations. Assess environmental controls. Collects data on the incidence of selected device use in intensive care units and other patient care areas. Directs investigation of unusual hospital infection outbreaks. Reports all in-house patients with communicable disease to the county and/or state health department and maintain appropriate records.
    • Responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Service Unit Infection Control (IC) Program including the TB program and Infection Control and Prevention Plan. Provides infection control education to al Service Unit staff. Serves as a consultant to administrative and medical professionals, housekeeping and allied health staff on matters involving healthcare acquired infection, institutional and employee health programs. Serves as chair and subject matter expert for the SU Infection Control Committee. Attends Navajo Area Infection Control meetings.
    • Collect data and prepare reports in support of epidemiological studies of specific problems or problem areas to determine the source of the problem and make appropriate recommendations. Selects quality/performance improvement indicators; prepares program budget based on the projected use of the data and evaluation of programs. Participate in continuing educational activities. Maintains compliance with national standards and regulatory bodies.
    • Maintains medical devices, surgical procedures and surgical site infections data into National Health Safety Network (NHSN).
    • Collaborates with the Employee Health Nurse, assuring that all regulatory requirements are met. Serves as back up to the Employee Health Program.

    Background Investigation: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation.     Qualifications
    To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

    BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

    Education:
    A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

    Licensure:
    For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

    In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Experience: The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing.

    Basic Requirements for the GS-12 (or equivalent) Grade Level: In addition to the mandatory license and education described above under Basic Requirements applicants must have at least one or more full years of professional nursing experience that is equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. EXAMPLES OF SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience developing policies and procedures for infection control, employee health and patient safety and ensure compliance with accreditation requirements. Experience working with infection control and prevention programs; accreditation requirements and regulations; where work products and programs impacts the health and safety of patients.

    You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.

    Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
