Investment Analyst

Job Summary

The Investment Analyst is an integral team member who will assist with investment research, portfolio and risk management and reporting functions of the Carilion Clinic Investment Office, which is the internal investment management function of the health system with oversight responsibility for $1.2 billion in investable operating assets and $1.1 billion in defined benefit pension assets.

  • Position requires an understanding of institutional investment management process and general knowledge of stock, bond and alternative investment asset classes. Periodic travel for investment manager due diligence meetings or industry conferences may be required. 
  • Develop and maintain advanced knowledge of portfolio risk modeling techniques and financial analysis methodologies. Exhibit the ability to apply this knowledge across Carilion's investment portfolios to help manage and quantify risk exposures and support investment decisions.
  • Assist with compliance, audit and reporting requirements of different investments, with an emphasis on requirements of alternative investments (private funds, hedge funds). Assist with management of cash flows and investment capital call schedule in coordination with Carilion's cash management function.
  • Track financial market and macro-economic data in support of both strategic and tactical asset allocation decisions. Administer third party portfolio analytics and custodian bank systems.
  • Work with external investment consulting firms and their databases in the areas of performance reporting, investment manager and asset class research and special projects. Help with preparation of presentation materials for periodic Finance Committee and Investment Advisory Subcommittee meetings and monthly internal investment communications reporting.
  • Assist with ongoing investment manager due diligence, sourcing and performance monitoring with opportunity to develop more specialized area of focus and responsibility over time.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field or eight years of relevant experience in lieu of degree. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience: Four or more years experience in health care finance or investment function not restricted to health care sector.

Licensure/Certifications/Registration: Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation or working toward or interest in working toward designation a plus.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Working knowledge of Excel, quantitative analysis and portfolio management concepts. Working knowledge of PowerPoint. Advanced reasoning skills and the proven ability to think independently and intuitively. Demonstrated team building and leadership skills.
