Senior Manager eCommerce Engineering (Delivery Automation, Monitoring, and Tools)

Position Description

As the Senior Manager of Grainger’s delivery automation, monitoring, and tools technologies, this Individual will lead the scoping, planning, and delivery of eCommerce solutions to the Grainger Technology Group (GTG) organization.  This role requires a deep understanding/prior experience in delivering and monitoring complex services – where uptime and responsiveness are vital to customer experience and business success.  The Senior Manager will lead a team of 12+ technologists building and supporting digital solutions.   This is an exciting opportunity to influence and strengthen competitiveness across every facet of Grainger’s business which in turn provides individual growth opportunities.  As our platforms are transforming (API and Cloud 1st), focus on enabling new capabilities through immutable infrastructure, containers, service meshes, orchestrators, serverless functions, infrastructure/monitoring as code, edge computing, cloud technologies, AWS, microservices, and active/active clustering.  This role will be vital to the success of these activities.  

This position will be based in downtown Chicago, Illinois with occasional travel between Lake Forest (Corporate).

  • Stakeholder with key constituents at the manager thru director levels to ensure that the team is successfully meeting their needs on an ongoing basis
  • Partner with director level personnel within the Grainger Technology Group and the Director of ES Architecture to consult on the formation of future initiatives within the delivery automation and tools space
  • Partner with senior manager and director level peers within the Portfolio organization to ensure that work is flowing to the team in optimal fashion
  • Ensure the Delivery Automation, Monitoring, and Tools organization is successfully delivering on initiatives in an efficient manner with a high degree of quality
  • Originate strategic projects as required within GTG, build a business case, and drive them through the Operating Model
  • Partner with other organizations to build out and implement a 3-year roadmap that propels the developer experience and observability space forward
  • Actively work to ensure a cost-effective organization by leveraging opportunities to optimize expenditures whenever possible.
  • Support the formation of a diverse team by actively working to recruit underrepresented populations

 

  • Project Management:
  • Leads concurrent projects from conception through delivery
  • Participates in vendor negotiations, SOW authoring, and contract review
  • Prepares roadmaps and budgets to deliver projects and drive ongoing improvements for API platforms
  • Works with stakeholders and architects to solidify designs and plan project execution
  • Understands Agile principles and various ceremonies

 

  • Technical Skills/Background:
  • Understanding and previous experience with Cloud (Preferable Amazon Web Services), microservices, eCommerce solutions, application security, web protocols, Ansible, Terraform, Kubernetes, Istio/Envoy, Docker, Yaml, Python, SOAP, XML, JSON, and REST.  A knowledge of SAP integration is a definite plus. 
  • Knowledge with developer tools such as BitBucket, Bamboo, Jenkins, CircleCI, Terraform, Jira, Confluence, etc
  • Background in networking and an understanding of ports, load balancers, subnetting, DNS, and firewalls
  • Prior experience in the eCommerce space is desired
  • A broad background leading the design of highly available environments and business continuation planning
  • Meaningful prior experience delivering and consuming APIs.

Position Requirements

  • 5+ years of prior experience in the eCommerce space as a manager
  • 3+ years of prior management experience with HR direct reports
  • 2+ years of working in an onshore/offshore model leading developers, support personnel, and engineers
  • Experience operating in a large enterprise environment with multiple platforms and a diverse set of stakeholders
  • Demonstrated understanding of global wholesale distribution, sales, marketing, eCommerce, and supply Chain data/content and processes
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills; Ability to create original concepts and theories in support of the Grainger Business strategy
  • Demonstrated excellence with written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including teamwork, facilitation, and negotiation
  • Sound knowledge of financial models and budgeting
  • Ability to influence others and generate consensus
  • Attention to detail, excellent problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree in information technology, computer science, management or related field preferred
