JOB SUMMARY

The Athletic Trainer/Orthopedic Technician (ATC/OTC) in Physician Practice sees patients presenting with athletic/sports injury independent of the physician. For patients presenting with general (non-athletic/sports injury) orthopedic concerns, the Athletic Trainer/Orthopedic Technician provides care in consult with the physician. The Athletic Trainer/Orthopedic Technician also maintains certification as an Orthopedic Technician, allowing function as procedural/surgical support to physician. Screens for history associated with reason for visit and obtains key information including activities, symptoms, and pain. Provides direct patient care including splinting/wrapping/bracing, fracture/dislocation reduction, surgical assisting, and patient education for injury prevention and treatment of existing injuries. Provides telephone triage and advice related to athletic/sports injury. Provides telephone triage and advice related to general (non-athletic/sports injury) orthopedic concerns in consult with the physician.

EDUCATION
  • Bachelor’s degree in health science or related field
CERTIFICATION SUMMARY
  • Athletic Trainer Certified (ATC) - National Athletic Trainers Association
  • Licensed in State of Georgia - Georgia Board of Athletic Trainers
  • Orthopaedic Technologist Certified (OTC) - National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
EXPERIENCE*
  • Three years of similar experience in a healthcare environment
  • Experience in the identification, care, and follow up of on-field and sports-related injuries
  • Experience in clinical treatment aspects for sports medicine patients
  • Experience in musculoskeletal and neurological physical examinations
  • Experience in concussion etiology and treatment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS*
  • Master’s degree
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES*
  • Strong fundamental knowledge regarding musculoskeletal medicine and non-central nervous system neurology
  • Knowledge of musculoskeletal and neurological physical examinations
  • Knowledge of concussion etiology and treatment
  • Willing to work a flexible schedule and perform a variety of work-related tasks as needed
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES*

1. Performs clinical triage and initial assessment of patient's history, complaints/injuries and assists in diagnosis and development of treatment plans.

2. Provides technical assistance to sponsoring physician in providing patient care:

                a. Patient and family education

                b. Skin preparation

                c. Applies, modifies, and removes casts, bandages, braces, and splints

3. Provides assistance to sponsoring physician in surgery

                a. Sets up patient and equipment

                b. Maintains environment and equipment

                c. Assists with surgery, such as suctioning and retraction

                d. Immobilizes and supports limbs and joints

                e. Applies dressings, bandages, strappings, etc

4. Returns patient phone calls, emails, faxes, physical training scripts.

5. Assists in research/data collection.

6. Assists physician in reading, reviewing, and addressing imaging studies.

7. Coordinates marketing efforts by establishing relationships with and participating in personal visits in the community, including schools, sports clubs, and various organizations to help promote the sports medicine practice.

8. Attends miscellaneous sports events, programs, and/or activities to help create a presence and awareness of the sports medicine practice and provide educational and informational opportunities in the community.

9. Orders and performs ImPACT testing related to concussion.

SYSTEM RESPONSIBILITIES*

Safety: Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsible for the reporting of employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents, or other safety issues to the supervisor and in the occurrence notification system.

 

Compliance: Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility. Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and supports problem resolution process. Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to the Compliance Office.
