COVID Innovation Engineering Internship

The Carilion Clinic COVID Innovation Engineering Internship will be 20 hours per week through the duration of the Fall and potentiall Spring semesters. Will support one or more experienced engineers in performance of assignments, spend time shadowing actual operations, and have unique assignments that support larger projects as well as experience the day-to-day workings of engineering. Interns may perform and/or participate in additional activities/events which help them build a strong network within the VT and Carilion community. Assist in the development and implementation of clear, complete and accurate working plans and detail drawings from rough or detailed sketches or notes for engineering or manufacturing purposes, according to specified dimensions using computer and specially designed software.

Primary Responsibilities include the following:

  • Perform engineering change processes as necessary to support existing products.
  • Create 3-D models from 2-D drawings.
  • Generate and scan prints.
  • Ability to perform mechanical design calculations.
  • Documenting user requirements and potential product specifications
  • Working with VT mentors and Carilion clinician stakeholders to develop prototypes of solutions in line with excellent engineering and safety principles
  • Develop testing protocols and execute testing, under structured mentorship
  • Conduct data analysis and perform basic product (hardware/software) evaluation and redesign, engaging stakeholders and mentors throughout the process
  • Develop data-driven reports (PowerPoint/written/multimedia) to be shared with the COVID Innovation team
  • Focus on priority projects, as determined by the COVID Innovation Team
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

Education: Preferably Engineering student, 4th year undergraduate, or graduate student.
Experience: Biomedical engineering, or equivalent experience
Other Minimum Qualifications: Meets basic requirements for visiting student at Carilion Clinic. Must be able to travel to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital/VTCSOM/Center for Simulation, Research and Patient Safety Roanoke Campus
