Wound Ostomy Nurse (RN) - Enterostomal Therapy

The Wound Ostomy Nurse functions as the Clinical Expert and Resource for Patients and the Healthcare Team for GI and GU stomas, Continence Disorders, Acute, and Chronic Wound and Skin breakdown and Fistulae. Provides direct wound and ostomy care as ordered by a physician in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Provides Patient/Family teaching and instruction of wound and ostomy management both pre and postoperatively. Assists the healthcare team in the evaluation of skin and wound products and equipment along with providing educational programs, in-services and bedside teaching for the nursing staff. Stays up-to-date with skincare practices and shares advances in wound and skincare assessments, evaluations, treatments, and prevention measures.


Essential Functions:
• Provides direct skin/wound patient care and is a resource to the nursing staff to provide patient care in accordance with professional regulatory standards. Automatically assesses all patients with a pressure ulcer staged at a 3 or above and sees all patients that have developed a hospital-acquired pressure ulcer
• Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population as outlined in the job description and competencies
• Educates hospital staff and patients regarding the prevention of pressure ulcers
• Support nursing units to ensure they are compliant with skin/wound care treatments and reporting requirements are completed
• Works collaboratively with the Skin Care Committee and Nursing Units to achieve the target of 0 HAPUs
• Acts as a Clinical Resource for skin/wound care and is utilized and viewed as a role model and clinical expert
• Responsible for being knowledgeable in the subject of skin and wound care and is certified in Wound and Ostomy Nursing
• Is self-directed and functions independently in executing assigned duties, setting priorities, making decisions and meeting deadlines
• Stays current in professional knowledge and skill
• Involved in hospital committees and serves as the skin/wound care expert
• Completes quarterly prevalence studies
• Performs other duties as assigned

 

Job Requirements:

• Active, Current California RN License
• BLS Certifications
• Minimum of four years of clinical nursing experience
• Demonstrates clinical expertise specific to the age of population served
• If BSN has not been obtained upon hire then the Clinical Nurse I must begin the BSN program within one year of the hire date and obtain their BSN within two years of starting the program

 

Job Preferences:

• BSN
• Minimum of two years in the area of specialization
• Ability work autonomously in a self-directed manner; demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal skills, knowledge of proper body mechanics, safety measures and infection control
• Certification in area of specialty
