Division and Unit Overview

The American Chemical Society is the world’s largest scientific membership association and one of the top five scholarly publishers in the world. The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society provides to its members and the worldwide scientific community a comprehensive collection of high-quality information products and services for the practice and advancement of the chemical sciences. The Division publishes 60+ high-quality peer-reviewed journals that cover the breadth of chemistry and allied fields, as well as a weekly magazine, peer reviewed books and reference works (ACS Reagents, ACS Guide to Scholarly Communications).

 

The Journals Publishing Group consists of four main teams: Global Editorial Operations, Global Production Operations, Business Intelligence & Analytics, and Editorial Development. These teams collaborate to optimize the editorial direction and production of our journals, and to ensure that our authors and reviewers have a positive publishing experience. In support of that mission, Global Editorial Operations performs three main functions: Product Development, Journal & Product Support (vendor management), and Peer Review Services.

 

Position Summary

As part of Global Editorial Operations, the Product Development team’s primary focus is to develop and maintain products and services that enhance relationships with the authoring and reviewing community, including training/educational products, for-fee author services, and services utilized by our journal editors. This group leads the development of products such as the ACS Publishing Center, ACS Author and Reviewer Labs, ChemRxiv, and a suite of revenue generating author services including Supplementary Covers, figure formatting, data validation, and post-publication promotion.

 

The Manager, Product Development will lead a team of Product Managers and Analysts to oversee the ongoing development and management of existing products, lead efforts to develop new products, including those that support sister departments in the Journals Publishing Group. These activities involve rich collaboration across many ACS Publications departments, including Editorial Development, Marketing, New Product Innovation, and IT. There are also opportunities for direct collaboration with our Editors-in-Chief.

 

Work design: Works independently with regular interaction with the Director of Global Editorial Operations. Manages a team of 2-3 direct reports, plus 3-4 indirect reports. Manages vendor relationships. Resolves non-routine problems by applying general policies, practices, procedures and principles. Performs in-depth analyses of standard problems. Independently sets priorities and makes decisions to ensure that the group’s standards of timeliness and quality are met in alignment with business objectives.

 

Position Accountabilities

 

The incumbent will oversee the ongoing development and management of existing products and services, performing the following core tasks:

1.            Lead the Product Development team, ensuring priorities and resources are aligned to Division goals.

2.            Maintain P&L responsibility for all existing products. Participate in budgeting discussions with peer departments.

3.            Develop product roadmaps, identify and report on key milestones and KPI’s.

4.            Identify new business opportunities, including collaborations with like-minded organizations and licensing opportunities.

5.            Lead regular interactions with steering committees and project teams. Builds relationships and a shared vision for each project’s outcome.

6.            In partnership with IT, manage product platforms and prioritize development.

7.            Manage vendor relationships, including contract negotiation and budget dimensions of $4M+.

8.            Coordinate with ACS International colleagues to provide country-specific promotion of products and services.

 

The incumbent will also lead efforts to develop business plans for new publishing products and services, performing the following core tasks:

1.            Establish a framework for editor training on publishing ethics and bias in peer review.

2.            Lead business plan development for new publishing products, coordinate market research.

3.            Coordinate with the Publications PMO on ideation, budget review/approval cycles, and project resourcing.

4.            Oversee development of requirements documentation.

5.            Evaluate potential technical solutions, participate in RFP’s as needed.

6.            Coordinate with colleagues in Marketing & Outreach to develop go-to-market plan, promotion, etc.

 

Required Skills

•             Strong communication skills, especially the ability to communicate across a broad spectrum of stakeholders, members of leadership, and members of the community.

•             Prioritization and decision-making skills are key, ability to map work to division goals and prioritize accordingly

•             Proven business knowledge, including ability to develop P&L’s, conduct market research, and develop and monitor product- and market-specific KPIs

•             Ability to manage a high-performing team of experts in their respective fields

•             Knowledge of Product Management cycles and approaches 

Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge

•             Bachelor’s Degree required. Prefer (but do not require) a degree in Business, Marketing, Communications/Journalism or IT. Will also consider candidates with a degree in the physical sciences.

•             8+ years of product development or relevant experience, including 3+ years’ experience in a lead or supervisor position to include remote management.

•             Experience leading project teams in the Business Owner or Business Lead role.

•             Experience evaluating vendors and technology solutions.

•             Experience with budget management and forecasting

•             Strong communications skills, with an aptitude for adjusting messaging to meet the needs of different audiences (horizontally and vertically).

•             Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects at once.

•             Publishing experience preferred but not required.

•             Proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and web-based programs and tools required.

•             Experience with project management tools a plus

•             Some travel required (up to 15%)
