Job Brief

The Payroll Tax & Compliance Analyst is responsible for the setup, co-ordination and reconciliation of multi state payroll taxes. The position collaborates with Corporate and Field divisions to ensure accounting/tax issues are appropriately identified, analyzed, documented and reported. The Payroll Tax & Compliance Analyst also assists in the analysis and reconciliation of payroll tax with various federal, state and municipal tax agencies, and our third-party service provider.

 

Responsibilities

  • Reconciles all tax and unemployment liability accounts to the general ledger and investigates variances. Works on periodic, month end, quarter end, and year end payroll tax reconciliation.
  • Ensures internal controls related to payroll accounting processes are functioning as intended and are completed timely and accurately. Aggregates and provides information to support financial audits.
  • Proactively sets up tax locations in Payroll system and ADP Smart Compliance, including coordinating setting up accounts through ADP.
  • Works closely with technical departments to implement process improvements, test system changes and lead special projects within the payroll department.
  • Interacts with the Corporate and Field divisions to assist in the identification, analysis and resolution of tax accounting matters.
  • Interprets pay policies, e.g., vacation, LOA, disability, workers compensation, government regulations, withholding exemptions, etc. and ensures appropriate amounts/deductions are calculated and applied to various accounts correctly.
  • Documents payroll processes and procedures; may train payroll department staff.
  • Establish payroll tax accounts based on active work locations.
  • Establish payroll earnings and deduction components and assign appropriate tax calculations and accumulators.
  • Best practices for payroll tax compliance as Federal, State, and Local tax jurisdictional changes are mandated.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, human resources or business administration or the equivalent combination of education, training, or work experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years supporting Payroll Tax for multi-state payroll functions.
  • Broad knowledge of payroll principles, practices, processes and procedures
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations that affect payroll
  • Knowledgeable in the use and administration of payroll systems e.g., Workday,  PeopleSoft, ADP
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, decision-making, problem-solving, team-building and time management skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work on multiple assignments concurrently
  • Ability to work under pressure of deadlines
  • Technical Skills:  Intermediate Excel, ADP Smart Compliance,
  • Certifications:  FPC or CPP issued by American Payroll Association preferred.
