    Responsibilities

    Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    Staff Cardiologists are responsible for the oversight of all aspects of cardiac medical care delivered to patients under their care. They directly provide or supervise fellows, residents, students and/or mid-level providers in the evaluation and treatment of both inpatients and outpatients.
    Staff Cardiologists evaluate the patient to assess changes in the physical and mental status during inpatient or outpatient care. Documentation of every encounter will be entered into the electronic medical record, with the appropriate level of detail, with an assessment and plan for acute and ongoing care. Any notes written by the fellow, resident, student or midlevel provider under cardiology supervision are reviewed by the staff Cardiologist, with corrections and additions added in an attending note, as appropriate and in a manner consistent with the VA guidelines for resident and trainee supervision.
    During assigned times, Staff Cardiologists shall be available for all urgent or emergent assessments requested from any location in the hospital or on-site outpatient clinics and services. Evening and night call will be required as determined by service needs.

    Staff Cardiologists are appropriately credentialed and privileged. They participate in various hospital committees, Medicine Service and hospital in-service programs, and education programs of the Medicine Service, the hospital and the Academic Affiliate, UNM. They are also involved in continuous quality improvement and the VA peer review process.

    Staff Cardiologists shall be responsible for graduate and undergraduate medical education, and scientific research as appropriate. An Academic Faculty appointment may be available through the University of New Mexico, School of Medicine, Department of Medicine.

    Qualifications
    Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

    Basic Requirements:
    • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: (1) Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. (3) For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA), in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies or their equivalents which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
    • Physical Requirements - must pass pre-employment physical requirements according to the VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
