Description
As a Registered Nurse Labor & Delivery at Ascension, you will provide compassionate, evidence-based care to mothers, newborns, and families during one of the most important moments in their lives. Working within our Healthcare & Medical Services department, you will practice in a patient-focused, team-oriented environment that values diversity, inclusivity, and continuous learning, while supporting innovation and personal and professional growth.
In this role, you will care for laboring, antepartum, and postpartum patients, as well as their newborns, in a fast-paced acute care setting. You will perform comprehensive maternal and fetal assessments, monitor labor progress, interpret fetal heart tracings, administer medications and IV therapies, and collaborate with obstetricians, midwives, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, and other members of the care team to provide safe and timely interventions. You will assist with vaginal deliveries and cesarean sections, provide immediate newborn stabilization, and support early bonding and breastfeeding according to current best practices and Ascension’s standards of care.
You will be responsible for anticipating changes in maternal and fetal status, responding promptly to obstetric emergencies such as preeclampsia, postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, or non-reassuring fetal heart tones, and activating appropriate protocols to ensure optimal outcomes. Using strong clinical judgment and effective communication, you will educate and support patients and their families throughout labor, birth, and the postpartum period, explaining procedures, addressing concerns, and advocating for patient preferences within the plan of care.
Documentation of assessments, interventions, medications, and patient responses in the Electronic Medical Record will be an essential part of your daily practice, ensuring continuity and quality of care. You will follow infection prevention and safety policies, maintain a clean and organized care environment, and participate in quality improvement, evidence-based practice initiatives, and ongoing professional development opportunities offered by Ascension.
Ascension offers a collaborative culture where RNs are encouraged to expand their skills and advance their careers through education, preceptorship, and leadership pathways. In keeping with our mission as one of the largest non-profit healthcare organizations in the U.S., you will be part of a community-centric team committed to compassionate service and clinical excellence. Full-time associates are eligible for a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and retirement savings plans, along with resources that support work-life balance and continuous learning.
This position is an on-site, hospital-based role that involves rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to meet the needs of our patients and ensure 24/7 coverage in the Labor & Delivery unit.
