Mission Health, a comprehensive healthcare provider based in Asheville, NC, is seeking a Nurse Extern for the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) on a PRN basis. This role is designed for nursing students who are passionate about developing their clinical skills in a high-acuity, patient-centered environment while working alongside an experienced team of Registered Nurses and interdisciplinary professionals. As a Nurse Extern in the Progressive Care Unit, you will provide direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a licensed RN, supporting patients with complex medical and post-surgical needs who require frequent monitoring and advanced nursing interventions. You will assist with basic nursing care such as hygiene, mobility, vital sign monitoring, intake and output measurements, and safe patient transport, as well as support nurses with procedures and treatments appropriate to your level of training and hospital policy. The position offers the opportunity to observe and participate in the management of patients requiring cardiac monitoring, titrated medications, and detailed care plans, reinforcing your classroom learning with hands-on experience. In this PRN role, you will work flexible shifts based on unit needs, which may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays, allowing you to balance academic commitments while gaining valuable clinical exposure. Mission Health fosters a collaborative environment emphasizing teamwork, respect, and professional growth, and you will be encouraged to ask questions, seek mentorship, and actively engage in learning opportunities. You will participate in accurate and timely documentation, contribute to maintaining a safe, clean, and organized unit environment, follow infection prevention and patient safety protocols, and communicate effectively with nurses, providers, patients, and families. This Nurse Extern position supports your transition from student to professional nurse, strengthening critical thinking, prioritization, and communication skills while reinforcing Mission Health’s commitment to compassionate, high-quality care. Candidates should be currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program and nearing completion of foundational clinical coursework, demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, a commitment to patient advocacy, and a desire to grow within a progressive care setting. This opportunity provides valuable experience that can support advancement into a Registered Nurse role within Mission Health upon graduation and licensure, aligning with the organization’s focus on long-term professional development and excellence in healthcare delivery.
