Job Summary
Ensures all surgical supplies, instruments and equipment are properly inventoried, decontaminated, assembled, inspected, packaged, sterilized, stored, distributed and tracked based on quality and infection prevention standards and in an efficient/effective manner.

Essential Functions
  • Cleans and decontaminates medical equipment and instrumentation using appropriate methods, solutions and processing equipment.
  • Prepares medical equipment and instrumentation for use through proper inspection for cleanliness and functionality; set assembly with attention to inventory lists, set configuration and instrument protection; proper wrapping and containerizing and labeling.
  • Utilizes sterilization method and sequence appropriate to item.
  • Properly documents and verifies sterilization loads and biological tests to determine efficacy of sterilization processes.
  • Understands, operates and maintains sterile processing equipment to include a variety of testing devices.
  • Properly handles/transports and stores sterile supplies, equipment and instruments.
  • Disburses medical and surgical supplies and equipment, based on documented preferences, in an effective and timely manner.
  • Demonstrates effective inventory control practices and communicates supply issues in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills.
  • Fully participates in ongoing quality assurance and process improvement work within department.
  • Completes special project work needed to promote quality and efficiency within department.
  • Performs charge/lead technician role as needed.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time. Work requires bending, stooping, reaching and stretching. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and push/pull heavy loads. Must have dexterity in both hands and fingers and the acuity to see, hear, smell and touching sensation. Must be able to function effectively during times of high stress. Must possess the ability to follow written and/or oral directions.

Education, Experience and Certifications
High School Diploma or GED required. 1 year of sterile processing technician experience and an applicable professional certification i.e. Certified Sterile Processing Department Technician (CSPDT), SPD Surgical Instrument Specialist (CSIS) Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST), or Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) required. Membership in a professional central sterile/sterile processing organization preferred.
