    The South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) is comprised of two inpatient campuses: the Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital in San Antonio and the Kerrville VA Hospital in Kerrville, Texas. The STVHCS serves one of the largest primary service areas in the nation, with 63 counties, and is part of the VA Heart of Texas Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN 17), with offices located in Arlington, Texas. Providing a service to Veterans with a working staff of more than 3,100 employees, South Texas provides health care services for 93,000 Veterans. The STVHCS is a facility providing primary, secondary and tertiary health care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine. It also supports a 90 bed Extended Care Therapy Center, a 30-bed Spinal Cord Injury Center, an eight-bed Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and a Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center. Affiliated with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the system has an active ambulatory care program with numerous satellite outpatient clinics.

    Responsibilities

    In addition to observance of Federal national and local regulatory, policy, and accreditation requirements governing this Health Care System, this position encompasses the following examples of responsibilities overseen by their Section Chief. Staff physicians require appropriate time mapping and resources to ensure they are empowered to meet expected proficiencies in administration, clinical practice, education, and research. Duty hours and responsibilites are subject to change based on the needs of patient care.
    HR: Maintaining VA training requirements, and upkeep of credentials, state license and DEA Registration required
    Staff Management: Participate in the FPPE/OPPE process. Adheres to employee health requirements.Participate in Clinical Pertinence Reviews.
    Time/Leave Management: Adherence to tour of Duties, timely requests for leave in VISTA and for clinic cancellations
    Clinical Duties:The staff Cardiologist is expected to remain privileged and practicing in their specialty field.The exact privileges and procedures for a particular provider will be approved by the Professional Standards Board. All physicians must meet the following qualifications:
    Patient Care: Provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, treatment of disease, and care at the end of life.
    Medical/Clinical Knowledge: Demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical and social sciences, and the application of their knowledge to patient care and the education of others.
    Clinical Judgment: Ability to use scientific evidence and methods to investigate, evaluate, and improve patient care.
    Interpersonal & Communication Skills: Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that enable them to establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, and other members of the health care team.
    Professionalism: Demonstrate behaviors that reflect a commitment to continuous professional development, ethical practice, and understanding and sensitivity to diversity, and a responsible attitude toward their patients, their profession
    Systems-Based Practice: Demonstrate both an understanding of the contexts and systems in which health care is provided, and the ability to apply this knowledge to improve optimizing health care.

    Qualifications
    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

    Preferred Experience:
    • Must have experience with adult patients.
    • Board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology
    • Applicants must have current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training.
    • Experience Teaching/Evaluating Internal Medicine Residency or Fellowship Program.
    • Experience in admissions and acute care procedures.
    • Experience with Electronic Medical Records.
    • Active Patient Care duties in Inpatient and Outpatient Cardiology Setting within the last 2 years.
    • Experience in reading echocardiograms, EKGs, and holters
    • Experience in performing transesophageal echocardiograms and stress echocardiograms
    • Evidence of, form of scholarly activity (Poster/Meeting Presentation/Educational Lectures/Equivalent)
    • Position includes academic duties/supervising residents and med students
