Pre and Post Coat Production Operator ll, 2nd & 3rd shift

Job Summary


The Pre/Post Coat Operator will provide important production support by operating a variety of machines (including Hone Setup, Grinding, Vapormatt and Vaquablast) in a fast-paced environment. This role requires the ability to multi-task and pay close attention to detail. 


Key Job Responsibilities


Set up and operate any or all the following machines:  Top and Bottom Grinders, Automatic and Manual Hones. Load and unload inserts from multiple machines.  Orient inserts before grinding.  Change and adjust honing brushes and parameters to meet specifications.  Scope inserts to verify visual characteristics.  Pull samples and note pertinent information.  Perform dimensional and visual inspections of product.  Separate scrap from good inserts.  Record inspection results. Scan correct production information. Operate other equipment such as Cermet Washer, etc. as needed.                


Knowledge and Skills


Must have High School diploma or GED.  Can read and understand Insert Defect Criteria and Global Drawing Warehouse on Kennametal Intranet, insert identification, routings and operating procedures.  Can handle inserts with fingers without chipping.  Read blueprints to determine dimensions to be held while grinding.  Understand proper use of gages, standard micrometers, Hone Inspection System, Optical Comparators, Digimatic Indicators, 30X Microscope, “V” anvil micrometers, and Hole Micrometers to measure the characteristics being ground to meet the blueprint specifications.  Communicate with set-up persons, inspectors, supervisors, and managers.  Proficiency reached in 6 months or less.   


Work Environment


Controlled temperatures and dust collection systems.  Safety glasses with side-shields required.  Grinding operations require the use of coolant.  G & L 350 grinders work with hot wax and heated, deodorized kerosene.  Some operations may be performed on a raised platform approximately six inches high. 


Physical Demands: Approximately eight hours standing or sitting (depending on the operation) with break opportunities twice per eight-hour work period. Lifting insert trays weighing no more than thirty-three (33) pounds.                          


Problem Solving:  Run orders per the order selection procedure.  Assignments and instructions communicated orally and carried out by standing guidelines. Routine problems solved by operator using learned knowledge of insert styles and production processes.  Operators work to standard operating procedures (oral and/or written instructions).  Inspectors use Insert Defect Criteria on the Kennametal Intranet to determine acceptance/rejection of product.
