Product Engineer, Gorilla Glass

The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Corning’s Glass Technologies segment manufactures chemically strengthened cover glass, such as Gorilla® Glass® for the consumer electronics market and glass substrates for active matrix liquid crystal displays (“LCDs”) that are used primarily in LCD televisions, notebook computers and flat panel desktop monitors.

Scope of Position:
  • Responsible for working closely with customers and Application Engineers, AE to define and prioritize product requirements and to translate those requirements into a set of product attributes that can be accurately measured
  • Develop product specifications and work with Development and Engineering resources to ensure effective product development
  • Train AE once product specifications are established and support when customer issues are encountered
  • Work with AE to address customer technical issues and explain product performance and reliability to include testing methods
  • Work with customers to alter their test methods and processes, if necessary, to insure consistency with Corning’s methodology and improved fitness for use evaluation
  • As Gorilla® products/processes move through the stages of innovation, PE will refine the product specifications and develop a master spec. which will guide AE in the development of individual customer spec.
  • Ensure a theoretical basis exists for current global product specifications and future attribute performance targets
  • Work closely with engineering and manufacturing teams to insure process capability is established for each attribute so the master spec. can be met
  • Assist AE in communicating the benefits of product enhancements as needed
  • Gather and compile technical information from customers within the supply chain such as finishers, TPMs, ODM’s, and OEM’s, as well as equipment vendors, and AEs to maintain an up-to-date understanding of customer needs
  • Work with customers to ensure an appropriate product design and to recommend the optimized process flow to meet customer product design
  • Work with customers to look for the appropriate tools or technologies for their products
  • Maintain and ensure alignment between Master spec, External spec, Customer spec. (with AE), and Manufacturing Spec (with Quality)
  • Support AE, Development, Engineering, Manufacturing in conducting cost/benefit analysis and tests for proposed product improvement and new product introductions
  • Work with Product Line Manager, PLM to develop and present a compelling value proposition for new products, services, and / or attributes
Day to Day Responsibilities:
  • Support Forming and cold end handling/ downstream areas of our processes for various glass product lines, active and new glasses for Victoria platform
  • Support PE group activities such as product transparency evaluations, tank qualifications, attribute road mapping and CapMax / V-Max program
  • Specifications are established, up to date, and agreed to by Customer
  • Manufacturing capability understood to meet specifications
  • Support PE group activities such as product transparency evaluations, tank qualifications, attribute road mapping, and our stretch performance programs
  • Work with Account Manager, AE, Research/Development and Engineering, Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, PLM, and Performance/Reliability groups to execute on PE responsibilities
Required Knowledge/Skills
  • Ability to understand details of customer processes and equipment, clarify customer’ requirements and translate them into product attributes and specifications
  • Ability to build strong customer relationships, so detailed technical information is obtained
  • Ability to plan, execute, and communicate results for joint experiment with customer
  • Ability to identify and prioritize product improvement areas
  • Ability to communicate by e-mail and phone as internal communications will be across countries and cultures
  • Solid understanding of Corning processes (melting, forming, finishing, inspection)

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s in science or engineering (chemical or materials science degree preferred)
  • Experience in product specification, quality architecture, process improvement projects
  • Work experience with manufacturing teams and contract manufacturers
  • Experience with risk and statistical analysis
Qualifications:
  • On current position for 2 years or more
  • Have received at least 3 “Fully Met Expectation” rating on their last performance appraisal
  • Able to travel up to 25%
