Position Summary

The Speech Pathologist is responsible for ensuring PNHS values are achieved through daily operations, including direct patient care, professional development, outcome/competency assessment, regulatory compliance, and process improvements to advance patient care outcomes and satisfaction. Communicates professionally with staff, patients, families, physicians and other stakeholders. Develops and executes professional development plans; participates in department improvement initiatives. Weekend and holiday shifts may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality direct and indirect patient care, including evaluation, treatment, care plan development, and outcome reporting.
  • Collaborate with the team for holistic treatment approaches, goals and discharge planning.
  • Maintain professional development and documentation accuracy; comply with billing requirements.
  • Ensure safe practice in accordance with infection control policies and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in scheduling to optimize service delivery, safety, access and productivity; meet production expectations.
  • Engage in peer reviews and department development activities (volunteer events, local presentations, committees).
  • Utilize protected time and certifications to support department and organizational goals.
  • Advocate for the profession by supervising student internships/field experiences.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of age-related growth and development to provide appropriate service and ensure patient safety.

Scope of Responsibility

Involvement in direct and indirect patient care as directed. Practice in compliance with professional standards, ethics, PNHS policies and state/federal regulations. Rehab services locations include Methodist Hospital, Outpatient Clinics, Struthers Parkinson’s Center, and the Alexander Center.

Supervision/Work Direction

The Speech Pathologist makes clinical decisions and delegates appropriate portions of treatment to therapy assistants and/or aides; supervises assistants, aides, volunteers and students.

Contacts

Internal/external contacts include patients, family members/caregivers, physicians, health insurance representatives and other healthcare professionals.

Education/Experience

Required: Speech Pathologist credential, Master’s or Doctorate in Speech Language Pathology (Communication Disorders). Licensed in Minnesota. Experience as a Speech Pathologist in a medical setting is recommended.

Special Knowledge/Skills/Certifications/Licenses

  • Licensed with the Minnesota Department of Health.
  • ASHA certification required; MSHA membership recommended (or as specified).
  • Travel may be required to meet position expectations.
  • Development tracks require leadership qualities and professional role-modeling in the clinic.

Certification Tracks (Development)

Options detail requirements for certification, CE hours, clinical hours, exams, and ongoing renewal. If no re-certification exam exists, alternative requirements may be submitted for pre-approval by Rehab Leadership.

Machines/Equipment/Software

Proficient with communication and data processing equipment; proficient with clinical devices; proficient in electronic medical record software.

Critical Job Demands

Includes assessment of standing, walking, sitting, squatting, reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, handling, and other physical demands. Note on patient handling: assistive devices should be used for transferring patients >35 lbs as needed.

Hazard Assessment for PPE
