Overview

Research Associate - Criminal Law (JD Required)

Harvard Business School (HBS) seeks a Research Associate to support Professor Soltes in research focused on corporate integrity and risk management. The scope of work is primarily writing, with potential to code survey data in Python if aligned with the candidate’s skill set. The successful candidate will provide advanced subject-area expertise, analysis, and interpretation to the faculty.

Responsibilities

  • Build trust and collaboration by being present on-site and engaging directly with colleagues and various constituents.
  • Build questionnaires and conduct interviews with various groups, such as company employees.
  • Investigate qualitative data (e.g., interviews or focus groups) and quantitative data.
  • Edit and draft all forms of academic writing, including but not limited to articles, policy memos, and book chapters; create original writing based on research and interviews.
  • Examine prior research on areas including compliance regulation, organizational justice, psychological safety, among others.
  • Ensure compliance with department, University, and federal regulations. Complete work with general direction and be aware of department, School, University policies and potential outside research policies.
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Basic Qualifications:
    • Advanced JD degree required, or bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of relevant work experience, with a focus in Law, Economics, or related field knowledge.
    • Comfort with analyzing qualitative and quantitative data through statistical methods.
    • Criminal law exposure is required.
  • Additional Qualifications and Skills:
    • Extremely high standards for quality of work, attention to detail, strong organization skills, and commitment to task completion.
    • Ability to balance multiple tasks and shifting priorities under tight deadlines.
    • Familiarity with navigating a complex organization such as Harvard Business School is helpful.

  • This is a full-time term appointment starting as soon as possible through June 30, 2026, with potential for re-appointment for the following year. All HBS RA roles are structured as one-year appointments.

Work Format & Location

This is a hybrid position with a combination of remote and on-site work at the Boston, MA campus. HBS expects on-site presence 3 days per week. Specific hours and days are subject to change with advance notice. Some interviews may be conducted virtually or in-person. A cover letter is required to be considered. All candidates will be expected to submit a writing sample, transcript, and a code sample.

Other Details

This position is based on a Harvard campus location with remote work options available. Remote work must be performed within one of Harvard’s Registered Payroll States. Visa type and funding sources may limit work location. The role is a full-time term appointment through June 30, 2026, with potential for renewal. On-site work expectations and schedule will be provided during the interview process.
