Kai Ming, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non‑profit that provides free full‑day, full‑year and full‑day part‑year early‑care and education services in San Francisco, CA, funded by Head Start, the California Department of Education, First 5 San Francisco, and the San Francisco Office of Early Care & Education.
Essential Duties
- Curriculum: create and implement a quality curriculum that meets the physical, social, emotional, intellectual, health, and nutritional needs of each child in accordance with the National Head Start Performance Standards. Conduct developmental screenings and child assessments, prepare and submit required paperwork within deadlines. Prepare individualized education plans with appropriate adaptations for each child, including those with disabilities. Work with the Assistant Teacher to ensure balanced child‑directed and adult‑directed activities, including literacy, language, numeracy, critical thinking, problem‑solving, and creativity. Integrate health, nutrition, mental health, safety, diversity, and cultural awareness throughout all activities. Use informal and formal observations, ongoing assessments, and documentation to track progress, maintained in portfolios for each child.
- Environment: provide materials and equipment that are developmentally appropriate and varied. Ensure the environment meets safety standards and complies with state and federal regulations. Keep a well‑organized, clean, and pleasant classroom where children feel comfortable and secure. Conduct transitions consistently, timely, and predictably, according to each child’s needs. Create a curriculum that supports acceptance and respect of gender, culture, language, ethnicity, and family composition.
- Outdoor Activities: provide outdoor curriculum that enhances children’s physical and social development; interact with and closely supervise children outdoors; bend and lift a child (up to 50 lbs) as needed.
- Promote Social and Emotional Growth: give activities and guidance that help children accept, understand, and appreciate themselves; encourage independence and trust, providing opportunities for success that build self‑esteem and a positive attitude toward learning; teach self‑control with clear limits; promote respectful interactions and cultural diversity; maintain a consistent daily routine with respectful rules; model positive teacher/child and teacher/parent interactions.
- Family: conduct at least two home visits per year, establish expectations with parents and staff, hold two Parent‑Teacher conferences, and remain available to all parents on a formal and informal basis.
- Staff: participate in case conferences with the Assistant Teacher and Family and Community Advocates, attend center meetings, participate in CCDC consultation meetings, undertake staff development and professional training, supervise and train Assistants, Aides, and volunteers, conduct weekly team meetings, maintain attendance and meal records, report inappropriate behavior, and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field with a California Child Development Site Supervisor Permit.
- At least two years of experience teaching preschool children.
- Initiative, ability to accept direction and seek guidance, and commitment to maintaining high levels of health, safety, and supervision.
Other Requirements
- Annual physical exam and TB clearance.
- Criminal background clearance.
- Child Abuse Index clearance.
- Current certification in CPR and First Aid.
- Adherence to the Confidentiality Agreement and the Child Abuse Reporting Mandate.
- Regular physical activity: frequently change positions, sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, twist, reach, and pick up children.
- Light to moderate lifting (up to approximately 50 lbs).
- Adherence to the Kai Ming Code of Conduct and all internal policies.
- Accountable for the health, safety, and supervision of all children and families.
COVID‑19 Vaccination Requirement
Proof of COVID‑19 vaccination record or a weekly negative COVID‑19 test result.
Compensation
Salary will be commensurate with job and skill level. Benefits include health, vision, dental, acupuncture, chiropractic, life insurance, retirement, vacation time, sick leave, and personal time.
