Police Officer - Lateral - Washington State Academy Certified - Immediate Openings ($25,000 Hiring Incentive)
Join the Des Moines Police Department, dedicated to keeping the residents of Des Moines, Washington safe. We are looking for experienced law enforcement officers who are proactive, community‑oriented, and eager to make a difference.
Hiring Incentive: $25,000 paid in three installments.
Vacation: 40 hours upon hire.
Sick leave: 40 hours upon hire.
Job Summary
Under general supervision, the Police Officer performs a wide variety of duties involving the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; controls traffic flow and enforces state and local traffic regulations; issues citations; participates in and conducts a variety of criminal investigations; makes arrests; and provides support and assistance to special crime prevention and law‑enforcement programs.
Responsibilities
- Enforce state and local laws and regulations to maintain public safety.
- Control traffic flow and issue citations as needed.
- Participate in and conduct criminal investigations.
- Conduct arrests and deliver evidence to the appropriate authorities.
- Support and assist special crime prevention and law‑enforcement programs.
- Maintain professional conduct and community outreach as required.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License by the time of appointment.
- Minimum age of 20.5 years at the time of application.
- American citizenship or lawful permanent residency with ability to read and write English.
- Must not use tobacco products.
- Successfully pass all background screenings, including drug history, driving record, credit history, criminal record, work history, reference check, chief’s interview; conditional offers require polygraph and psychological and medical examinations including drug testing.
- Current and valid certification from a state with reciprocity with the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC).
- Pass WSCJTC equivalency academy within 6 months of hire as a full‑time commissioned officer in Washington.
- Be a full‑time commissioned law‑enforcement officer in good standing for at least 12 consecutive months.
- Any lapse in employment as a full‑time commissioned officer cannot exceed 24 months calculated from appointment date.
Benefits
- Education incentive pay: 2.5% for AA/AS/AT, 4% for BA/BS, 5% for MA/MS/MPA.
- Specialty pay premiums such as Field Training Officer, SWAT, Drug Recognition Expert, Collision Technician, etc.
- Previous years of aggregate service as a commissioned officer may be considered for initial placement on the DMPD wage scale.
- Longevity premiums after five (5) years of service.
- Patrol schedule: 12‑hour shifts, 3 days on, 3 days off, rotating.
- Bank of 104 hours of holiday leave received annually in January; up to 52 hours may be cashed out each December.
- 110 hours of Kelly Time off per year.
- 96 hours of paid vacation per year, progressing up to 192 hours per year.
- Medical plan options: LEOFF Trust Plan F (Premera) and Kaiser Permanente.
- Employer‑paid dental and orthodontia.
- Employer‑funded HRA‑VEBA account.
- Participation in Washington State LEOFF retirement system.
- City contributes 6.52% of wages to a 401(a) Social Security replacement plan.
