Job Description:
The State University of New York (SUNY), located in Albany, New York, seeks an Energy Manager to manage a newly-created Green Energy Loan Fund for energy efficiency and carbon reduction projects at SUNY's State-operated campuses, to support and assist campuses on energy efficiency initiatives and meeting sustainability goals, and to apply for and secure other funding for energy efficiency projects at state-operated campuses and community college campuses.

This position will assist SUNY campuses in reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency, meeting BuildSmart 2025 and Executive Order 22 goals, saving money, and achieving state clean energy targets. The position will report up to the Chief Sustainability Officer.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development and implementation of the SUNY Green Energy Loan Fund, including drafting guideline documents, procedures, and best management practices, providing program information, soliciting energy efficiency projects from State-operated campuses, developing selection criteria, making awards, tracking project, energy, and repayment performance, and ensuring the growth of the fund.
  • Conduct financial viability assessments of energy projects and review cost analyses.
  • Track energy Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), including energy efficiency, energy use intensity, carbon reduction, and electrification efforts.
  • Assist State-operated and community college campuses in securing funding opportunities and navigating grant application processes, including identifying and supporting applications for federal, state, local, and utility incentives to support clean energy initiatives.
  • Collaborate with NYSERDA, NYPA, DASNY, and other state agencies to align SUNY initiatives with broader clean energy goals.
  • Work with local utilities to develop energy efficiency measures, demand response programs, rebates, and infrastructure improvements.
  • Support energy efficiency efforts at SUNY campuses by advising about campus energy project planning and implementation, and by assisting campuses with developing and implementing shared services opportunities related to energy operations and efficiency.
  • Support renewable energy implementation at campuses.
  • Research and review grant funding opportunities for more advanced sustainability and resilience strategies, including microgrid development and campus electrification.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, engineering, or a related field.
  • 3-7 years of experience in energy efficiency, sustainability, project management, and budgeting.
  • Experience with energy data management and financial evaluation of clean energy projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with stakeholders at all levels, including campus leadership and state agencies.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree specialization in energy management, environmental science, or applied engineering.
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP), and/or other relevant certifications related to energy use in facilities.
  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience in efficiency upgrades, energy operations, and incentive programs.
  • Knowledge of sustainability best practices and emerging clean energy technologies.

Additional Information:

  • Must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. VISA sponsorship is NOT available for this position.
  • Salary is dependent on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, experience, education, training, and certifications. The range for this position is $80,000-$90,000 annually.
  • State Title: Staff Associate (SL-4) and is part of the United University Professions Union.
