Accelerator Technologist IV - Mechanical (Bargaining Unit)
The Accelerator Technologist IV supports SLAC’s accelerator and experimental programs by performing advanced mechanical fabrication, assembly, installation, and maintenance activities. This position requires a high degree of technical skill and versatility in mechanical systems, magnet coil fabrication, vacuum systems, and cryomodule installation. Work is performed under minimal supervision while maintaining strict adherence to SLAC’s Environmental, Safety, and Health standards and respectful workplace guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and perform complex fabrication, field assembly, and installation tasks using drawings, sketches, and verbal instructions.
- Fabricate, assemble, test, and troubleshoot magnet coils and assemblies; perform brazing and hydro-testing of cooling water coil fittings.
- Design and build coil forms and coil assembly tooling; perform intermediate to advanced plumbing and tube bending.
- Conduct precision measurements and electrical testing using micrometers, calipers, optical alignment devices, gauges, microscopes, and meters.
- Apply cleanroom techniques, ultra‑high vacuum theory, and cryomodule installation practices.
- Operate various machine tools such as band saws, drill presses, shears, and grinders; operate a 20‑ton overhead crane.
- Perform field installations and removals of complex experimental and support equipment within LINAC and related facilities.
- Serve as Field Manager when assigned—plan, coordinate, and direct team tasks; forecast schedules; and interface with engineers and area managers.
- Design and fabricate custom fixtures and tooling as needed.
- Ensure safe and compliant work practices; follow lockout/tagout procedures and radiation safety protocols.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in mechanical fabrication, magnet coil work, or precision assembly, including field installation and maintenance activities.
- Must obtain and maintain all required SLAC ES&H certifications (e.g., crane operation, lockout/tagout, radiation worker, confined space).
- Expert‑level knowledge of magnet fabrication, coil winding, testing, and assembly processes.
- Experience with cryomodules and cryogenic system installations.
- Proficiency in the design and use of tooling, fixtures, and precision measuring instruments.
- Strong understanding of vacuum systems and cleanroom practices.
- Skilled in the use of mechanical and electrical testing equipment.
- Familiarity with handling radioactive and hazardous materials.
- Ability to interpret complex technical drawings and specifications.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, teamwork, and respectful workplace behavior.
- Must possess a valid California Driver’s License and a good driving record for site transportation.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Exposure to noisy machinery, hot materials, hazardous lifting equipment, and occasional contact with hazardous or radioactive materials.
- Frequent standing, walking, lifting, and operation of heavy machinery and tools.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment and work in radiation‑controlled areas.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Manual dexterity and physical endurance for extended periods of fabrication or assembly work.
