CDOC HVAC Lieutenant CSLTS II (Canon City)
Colorado Department of Revenue (CDOC) is hiring an HVAC Lieutenant for the Centennial Correctional Facility, Canon City, CO. Due to the State's current hiring freeze, this position will not be filled until January 1, 2026, unless a hiring freeze waiver or exemption has been approved.

Job Location
The first vacancy is at the Centennial Correctional Facility in Canon City, CO. This posting may also be used to fill future vacancies in Canon City.
Description Of Job
Primary responsibilities include ensuring the safety and security of the public, staff and inmates; ensuring safe, efficient and compliant operation of facility HVAC systems; supervising assigned staff and inmate work crews. The role aligns with the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values.
Safety and Security
Maintain facility safety through clear communication, training staff and inmates on the use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment and chemicals. Observe agency regulations and promote a secure environment.
Supervision
- Provide safety and security through supervision and training of staff and inmate workers.
- Participate in hiring, performance management, task assignment and coaching.
- Ensure inmate evaluations, hour tracking and job scheduling, and resolve grievances.
- May step in for other supervisors if needed.
Operations
Ensure safe, efficient and cost‑effective execution of HVAC tasks. Perform hands‑on instruction, monitor equipment, maintain Direct Digital Control system, coordinate logistics, document work orders, maintain compliance with ACA and other regulations, manage vendor quotes, and maintain inventory.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
- Active Universal Refrigerant License or EPA 608 Certification (Type I, II, III or Universal)
- Five (5) years of experience in design, installation, repair and maintenance of HVAC systems
- Successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program or accredited trade education may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Knowledge of CDOC Performance Management Program (PMP) policy
- Strong leadership, communication and decision‑making skills
- Ability to read blueprints, plan projects, and supervise inmates safely
- Physical ability to lift, climb, and perform defensive tactics
Preferred Qualification
- Experience in HVAC Commercial Equipment
- One or more years of supervisory experience
Conditions of Employment
- Must be 21 years of age
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Individuals with felony convictions or certain sexual behavior convictions are ineligible
- Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States; CDOC does not sponsor non‑residents
- Must successfully complete the six‑week CDOC Basic Training, including defensive tactics and health screening
- Physical fitness to perform defensive tactics, work in hazardous conditions, travel and work varied shifts
- Must pass a background investigation and drug screening
- Compliance with state drug and safety policies is required
