Job Overview

Howard University in Washington DC is seeking to hire a Postdoctoral Fellow to investigate the genetic underpinnings of health disparities and develop strategies to address them. The role may involve studying genetic variations associated with increased or decreased susceptibility to certain diseases or conditions, exploring the impact of genetic factors on treatment responses and medication efficacy, or examining the role of genetic and environmental interactions in health disparities.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Designing studies and conducting genomic sequencing, including whole genome sequencing, Sanger sequencing, and single‑nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping.
  • Analyzing data, interpreting findings, and publishing and presenting results. Collaborate with others to address health disparities in research.
  • Engage in multidisciplinary research combining genomics, epidemiology, bioinformatics, and social sciences to comprehensively analyze the complex factors contributing to health disparities.
  • Work with large‑scale genomic datasets such as genome‑wide association studies (GWAS), next‑generation sequencing data, or electronic health records to identify genetic variants or biomarkers associated with health disparities.
  • Perform additional research duties as required.
  • Expect a typical duration of one to three years, depending on performance and funding renewal.
  • Advance research skills, publish work, and build a strong foundation for future career development.
  • Participate actively in lab/group meetings, seminars, and scientific conferences; coordinate on‑site and virtual meetings/lectures as needed.

Core Competencies

  • Manage time and project(s) effectively with personal initiative. Mentor trainees and perform administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Travel as needed to collaborate on project objectives.
  • Write well scientifically, preparing regular reports, manuscripts for publication, and grant proposals.
  • Organize seminars and lecture series for the project and for the wider NHGC and QBL communities.
  • Respond to communications from the Principal Investigator and take direction promptly.

Minimum Requirements

A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant field such as genomics, genetics, molecular biology, ecology, bioinformatics, public health, microbiology, biophysics, quantum biology, or a related discipline. Computational experience in Chimera, PyMOL, or similar biomolecular modeling software and programming experience in Python, Fortran, and/or C is desired.
