The Public Investments department provides extensive institutional fixed income expertise to Northwestern Mutual and its affiliate corporations, including the employee retirement plan.


What's the role?

Our goal is to drive exceptional investment performance to support Northwestern Mutual’s financial strength and enhance product value for our clients. We are looking for an individual with a strong background in economic research and quantitative data analysis within a fixed income investment environment. The primary responsibilities of this role are to conduct fundamental economic research and quantitative/statistical analysis. This includes preparing independent economic research and evaluating potential portfolio strategies within a total return context and the investment policy guidelines of various portfolios. The incumbent is expected to produce concise written research, solid economic and quantitative analysis and identify and articulate the strengths and risks of potential trade ideas to senior investment staff to help drive investment performance. Additional responsibilities for this role would include some trading in US Treasury bonds, futures and cash.

  • Five or more years of experience in economic research and quantitative data analysis.
  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, data analysis, statistics or related field.
  • MBA or Master of Science with an emphasis on economics, statistics or other related areas would be a plus.
  • Experience with programming languages such as SQL, R or Python would be a plus.
  • Trading experience would be a plus.
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills.
  • Experience conducting presentations and making relative value recommendations regarding potential investment opportunities.
  • Consistently strong performance, which reflects proven success in securities analysis.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Works well independently, while promoting and contributing to a strong team dynamic.
  • High level of initiative, motivation, leadership and ownership.
