    The James H. Quillen VA Medical Center is seeking an immediate fill for a full-time Family Medicine or Internal Medicine physician to serve our Veteran patients at our William C. Tallent VA Outpatient Clinic located in Knoxville, Tennessee. Specific duties will be found below.

    Responsibilities

    This Announcement will remain open until filled and may be used to fill multiple vacancies. Applicants will be referred to the hiring manager as they are received and this announcement may close without advanced notice.

    The selected physician must coordinate care for a panel of patients as assigned, evaluating and treating acute and chronic health problems for scheduled and unscheduled patients in a clinic setting, perform histories and physical exams, perform office procedures within privileges as appropriate and prescribe medication as appropriate. The incumbent must order routine laboratory, radiological, and diagnostic tests and provide initial interpretation of results, communicate test results to patients, respond to questions and other inquiries from patients, initiate or expedite requests for consultations and special tests. The physician must also provide education to the patient and family as necessary, screen patients to determine the need for hospitalization, communicate clinical findings to other providers using the Computerized Patient Record System. Must also function as managing physician for a nurse practitioner or physician assistant as assigned. The incumbent must be capable of consistent communication and treatment of our Veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. The physician will provide the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures, and will handle conflicts and problems with dealing with patients and customers constructively and appropriately. Will be responsible to perform other duties including administrative tasks as assigned by the Chief, Primary Care, and CMO, WCTOPC.

    Work Schedule: Clinic operating hours are Mon - Fri, 7:00 am - 5:00 pm, and Saturday from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm. Schedules are available during these hours. A normal tour of duty would be Mon - Fri, Saturday rotations will be required periodically. Compressed tours may be available.

    Selected physicians will be eligible for the VA's Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP). This program may qualify you for up to $120,000 in debt reduction for qualifying education debt. Please contact our Human Resources Service and ask for the EDRP Coordinator for more information.

    Qualifications
    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Licensure and Registration: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of Residency Training: Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • English Language Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English.

    Preferred Experience: Board Certification in Internal Medicine or Family Practice. Current or prior VA experience is preferred.

    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

    Physical Requirements: Physicians should be physically and mentally capable to perform the examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan, and educate residents. Physical activity includes sitting, standing (for up to 2 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (intermittently, 45 lbs or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. Physician should be emotionally and mental stable and capable of performing the duties of the position.
