    This position is in Radiology Service. The incumbent will apply their knowledge of computer systems architecture, and infrastructure, and post processing to define the requirements for imaging database system design, development, deployment, and maintenance. The position requires extensive knowledge of programming techniques and languages in applying the theoretical foundations of computer science in a hospital environment. Duties are listed below:

    Responsibilities
    • Develops and utilizes state- of-the-art methods and practices to collect two-dimensional (2) and three-dimensional (3D) morphological data, dynamic four-dimensional (4D) data, and functional and molecular imaging.
    • Retrieves and segments the relevant data from available imaging studies performing advanced and complex image texture analysis of 20/30/40 data sets for the purpose extracting the most relevant radiomics or image based phenotypic information
    • Evaluates and consistently monitors the effectiveness of the image data management processes being utilized with the Service and researches, develops, implements, and maintains imaging and statistics based software systems.
    • Uses knowledge of imaging data structures and computer systems architecture
    • Provides extensive skill to fully develop and maintain imaging and Radiomics related systems.
    • Applies extracted radiomics information to epidemoligical and genomic data sets to generate epi-radio-genomic data sets using the most relevant phenotypic information and correlates it with the most validated research data to produce a report.
    • Enhances the applicability of post-processing imaging systems to existing clinical algorithms, adding new algorithms through the utilization of state-of-the-art methods related to computer software applications and advanced statistical tools.
    • Meets the needs of the varied clinical, academic, and research activities that affect the Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Service.
    • Researches, develops, and evaluates the effectivness of innovative approaches and methodologies for image acquisition, archiving, segmentation, and analysis, and for the utilization of post processing tools.
    • Researches, evaluates, adopts and maintains computer systems using radiomics concepts and computer languages, which can result in the development of a new approach, combining of existing approaches, or further exploration of innovative approaches.
    • Develops new software systems for integration into existing software systems and data structures. Assists in the design and implementation of an integrated information/computer system infrastructure to meet the needs of imaging actitives.
    • Participates in investigation of the suitability of specific methods, algorithms and software approaches to assignments. Provides technical guidance and software support for scientific computing linkage and database design.
    • Evaluates the progress of the Radiomics in meeting its objectives, documents the evaluation with periodic requests and consults with Physicians/Managers to identify opportunities for quality improvement.
    • Collaborates with team members and other colleagues to identify additional potential knowledge for management. Identifies ways in which existing and new systems can be adapted, and developed to address and meet stakeholder needs.
    • Monitors the quality of the data collected and the procedures used in connection with radiomics projects, ensuring that valid data is used to produce clinically relevant reports and that applicable VA data security measures and requirements are met.
    • Identifies, initiates, develops, implements and supports innovative imaging analysis and post image.
    • Observes and investigates software architectures and develops methods to improve software reusability and portability.
    • Works with Radiologists, Nuclear Medicine Physicians, and other Physicians to define the requirements for imaging database system design, development, deployment and maintenance.
    • Consults with technical staff members regarding program layouts, interrelationships, sequences, internal logic, utility routines, and the selection of appropriate programming language in connection with specific projects.
    • Provides technical assistance to Radiologists, Residents, Technologists and Radiology Administrators, regarding the technical and data collection and analysis aspects of the entire field of radiomics and computer-based post processing.

    Qualifications
    BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
    1. U.S. citizenship.
    2. English: All candidates must be proficient in written and spoken English.
    3. Education: A Bachelor's degree in computer science or a bachelors degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and coursework must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions. Applicants should have sufficient knowledge to understand the fundamental concepts and techniques of computer science. Courses designed to provide an introduction to computer science techniques and methodologies, to problems of system design, and to other specialized fields are acceptable. Courses or experience in teaching elementary, business or shop mathematics are not acceptable.

    Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-12 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-11. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
