Associate to the Honourable Justice Gray

Position: Judge’s Associate for the Supreme Court of Victoria – full time; ongoing, based in Melbourne CBD.

  • Full time; ongoing
  • $79,122 per annum + 12% superannuation (VPS Grade 3.1 position)
  • Role based in the Melbourne CBD

About the Role

Justice Gray has been a judge of the Supreme Court (Trial Division) since June 2023. He was previously a barrister who practised extensively in public law, public inquiries, and commercial and regulatory matters. He is currently judge-in‑charge of the Judicial Review and Appeals List, and co‑judge‑in‑charge of the Trusts, Equity and Probate List and the Testators’ Family Maintenance List.

Justice Gray is seeking a legally qualified individual to join his chambers team as Judge’s Associate, commencing in February 2026.

Duties

  • Assisting to coordinate and manage the Judge’s Practice Court duties
  • Managing the Judge’s hearing schedule
  • Assisting the Judge with preparation for court hearings
  • Assisting with the production of judgments, including research, analysis of material, proofreading and editing
  • Clerking in court
  • Reviewing files and drafting and checking orders
  • Performing administrative tasks, including maintaining court records and liaising with registry staff
  • Preparing research memoranda
  • Travelling on circuit in regional Victoria if required
  • Liaising with practitioners and litigants, and the media

About You

  • An impeccable character
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including an ability to convey information confidently and accurately over the telephone, in person, and via written communication
  • Exceptional legal research, proofreading and writing skills, proficiency in grammar and an excellent academic record
  • An ability to work collaboratively within a small team environment
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Diligence and a strong work ethic
  • A strong interest in a career in the law
  • A law degree from a tertiary or graduate institution within Australia or any other common law jurisdiction

As Justice Gray’s current responsibilities include judicial review and appeal cases, property cases, and trusts, equity, probate and family provision cases, it would be useful (but not essential) if you have worked as a lawyer in any of these areas.
