    The function of the Medical Instrument Technician (Anesthesia) assigned to VASDHS San Diego at this level is to assists anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, and residents with routine anesthetic procedures under minimal supervision. They maintain anesthesiology supplies and equipment, set-up anesthetizing locations and operate, monitor, and collect data from anesthesia related equipment. The Anesthesia Technician performs equipment preventive maintenance/repair.

    The Anesthesia Technicians work in a large research affiliated facility, and they are active participants in numerous and ongoing research and study related projects, as well as Performance Improvement Activities of the Service. Assists in the operating room accreditation process for JCAHO, SOARS, and OIG surveys and prepares necessary documentation and provides presentations of a technical nature to the surveyors and inspectors.
  • Obtaining and pre-processing all treatment related neuro-navigation brain MRIs;
  • Preparing all treatment related brain MRI prior to the procedures;
  • Setting up and maintaining all the equipment for the treatment;
  • Cleaning all the treatment related equipment and chair before and after each treatment session;
  • Operating the neuro-navigation systems during treatments;
  • Co-registering* the neuro-navigation system with the patients and treatment equipment;
  • Troubleshooting any equipment related problems;
  • Assisting in all aspects of the treatment under the supervision of the rotating attending physicians;
  • Must be able to adapt anesthesia systems to out-of-operating room area of the medical center at any time without direct supervision and in a timely manner. This includes assembling and operating life support equipment including ventilators, cardiac monitors and laboratory instruments.
    The incumbent will: Prepare and stock anesthesia machines, anesthesia carts, specialty carts and invasive monitoring trays. Be responsible for assuring the availability ventilators, CO2 canisters, vaporizers, electrocardiographs, O2 analyzers, transesophageal echocardiograph and apparatus for monitoring blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, inhaled/exhaled gas concentrations, pulmonary artery pressure, cardiac output, EEG, and other physiologic functions in the operating room.

    The incumbent will prepare operating rooms for the delivery of anesthesia. Room preparation will be performed between cases and/or at the conclusion of the day and will include:
  • Positioning equipment appropriately in the operating room.
  • Connecting necessary equipment.
  • Removing and putting away unnecessary equipment.
  • Cleaning and stocking anesthesia carts.
  • Filling vaporizers.
  • Preparing IVs and cleaning and restocking IV carts.
  • Setting up the cardiac room for call team or next day use.
  • Preparing arterial lines for call team or next day use.
  • Cleaning cables and checking them for damage.
  • Replacing damaged or misplaced articles of equipment such that rooms are ready for use at all times.
  • Assuring that charged oxygen transport tanks and suitable oxygen delivery devices are present at each anesthetizing location.

    Grade Determinations: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

    1. Knowledge of the correct use of invasive patient monitoring equipment specific to anesthesiology.

    2. Knowledge of basic electrocardiography (EKG).

    3. Skill and ability to troubleshoot equipment, often while the patient is anesthetized.

    4. Skill and ability to maintain sterility during procedures.

    5. Knowledge and understanding of arterial pressure line wave forms including the ability to recognize and distinguish normal from abnormal, artifact from abnormality, and forewarn the physician or anesthetist of an impending life-threatening situation.

    6. Knowledge of anesthesiology supplies, medications, and equipment appropriate to more difficult anesthetic procedures such as those found in inpatient settings with more acutely ill patients.

    The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-8 . The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-8

    Physical Requirements: The work requires long hours of continuous activity and considerable manual dexterity to assemble and set up equipment, instruments and supplies. Frequent walking, standing, stretching, and bending are required on a regular recurring basis. Incumbent will be required to push and pull moderately heavy objects, i.e. anesthesia machines, gurneys, and equipment. Ability to function under pressure and handle a fast-paced clinical environment is required.

    In compliance with the VA Directive 1192, annual influenza vaccination will be required for all VA employees. The vaccination will be provide by or proof on the vaccination must be provided to the VA Facility's Occupational ( Employee) Health Office on annual basis.

    Under the direction of the Supervisor MIT the incumbent will:
    Maintain a constant inventory of medications, intravenous solutions, inhalation anesthetic agents and other expendable or reusable supplies to ensure that these items are adequately stocked. Notify supervisor of diminished levels of SPD stock and/or special-order supplies.
    Maintain the cleanliness of anesthesia equipment and supplies and of the anesthesia workroom and blood gas laboratory areas. Be responsible for cleaning and sterilizing reusable equipment echocardiograph probes, EKG cables, anesthesia machines, atomizers, forceps, laryngoscopes, laryngeal mask airways, esophageal stethoscopes, connectors, and airways as per departmental infection control guidelines and/or VASDHS standards.
    Perform blood gas analysis, hematocrit measurement, and sodium and potassium determinations. Assist the supervisor to ensure that the Anesthesia blood gas lab complies with the requirement of the College of American Pathology.
    The incumbent will keep the anesthesia workroom and blood gas laboratory counters clean and orderly. Wash, wipe down, reassemble and put away equipment and accessories and drugs and supplies left on counters, carts, and in the operating room suites in appropriate locations.
    Responsible for participating in the pre-cleaning, cleaning, SPD reprocessing process, and restocking for bronchoscopes, and the pre-cleaning and cleaning of laryngoscope blades, TEE probes, the Glidescope Blades. Annual checklist competency is performed adhering to the VHA Directive 2009-004 for RME.
    The incumbent will: Prepare and stock anesthesia machines, anesthesia carts, specialty carts and invasive monitoring trays. Be responsible for assuring the availability ventilators, CO2 canisters, vaporizers, electrocardiographs, O2 analyzers, transesophageal echocardiograph and apparatus for monitoring blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, inhaled/exhaled gas concentrations, pulmonary artery pressure, cardiac output, EEG, and other physiologic functions in the operating room.

    The incumbent will: Perform the proceeding functions in a manner that assures prompt turnover of operating rooms between surgical procedures. Document and notify appropriate personnel, including supervisor, to assure repair or special ordering of replacements.

    The incumbent will have a basic understanding of set up and use of anesthesia equipment and will be able to detect common types of malfunctions. The incumbent will perform simple adjustments during anesthetic procedures or refer the matter to the immediate attention of the anesthesia care provider and the Supervisor of the A.S.G. In addition, the incumbent will perform routine trouble shooting on automated Anesthesia Record Keeping systems.

    The incumbent will assist anesthesia staff in starting and ending cases, including calibrating and connecting monitoring equipment to patients, zeroing transducers, preparing suction apparatus, obtaining fluid warmers and intraoperative warming/cooling devices, and preparing the transport monitoring equipment, and use of automated Anesthesia Record Keeping systems.

    The incumbent will: Make periodic rounds through the operating rooms to determine the needs of the anesthesia personnel. Attempt to be present in the anesthesia workroom/support lab as much as possible to offer assistance in locating and delivering anesthesia materials or equipment necessary for patient care.

    The incumbent will be able to set up anesthesia machine, related equipment and supplies in remote departments, e.g., Radiology, the MRI facility, and the Cardiac Catheterization Lab.

    The incumbent will: Prepare transport monitor on ICU beds. Check batteries and clean and check cables before and after each use. Provide support in transit to post anesthesia a care area and will appropriately interact with patients during anesthetic procedures.

    The incumbent will perform other anesthesia support functions as directed by the MIT Supervisor, the Chief CRNA and/or the Chief Anesthesia Service as well as the attending physician on call.

    Uses Word and EXCEL, as well as other PC software, to execute several functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files; activating printers; inserting and deleting text, typing and formatting functional statements, self-assessments, letters, reports, and memoranda; and transmitting and receiving e-mail. Uses CPRS to access information in the Medical Center Computer System, and uses VISTA to input leave requests.
