    This position is located in the Sterile Processing Section of the Springfield, MO. community Based Outpatient Clinic assigned to the Veterans Health Care Service of the Ozarks in Fayetteville, AR.

    Responsibilities

    Assignments include, but are not limited to, the collecting, processing and decontamination of soiled supplies, instruments and equipment; instrument preparation and sterilization; medical equipment maintenance, receiving, storing, and distribution of medical and surgical supplies, instruments and equipment. Processing and decontamination involve all the actions required prior to sterilizing and issuance. The
    primary function of processing is cleaning the supply items. Cleaning consists of one or more methods of removing gross contamination. Some items must be disassembled before cleaning. In some cases, items must be pre-sterilized before being handled in the processing unit. Incumbent decontaminates the complete range of medical and surgical supplies; instruments and equipment utilized within the medical center's wards, specialty clinics and the operating room. Disassembling and decontaminating complex equipment when interval mechanisms become soiled, then reassembling for further processing. Operation of steam cleaning equipment, ultrasonic cleaning equipment, automated endoscope reprocessing centers, and washer/decontaminator, Operation of machinery in compliance with
    established written guidelines heeding proper gauge setting, timers, continually alert in order to detect machine malfunctions.
    Equipment duties consist of the collection of used/soiled equipment, i.e. IPPB breathing machines, ventilators, suction machines, central vacuum regulators, infusion pumps, feeding pumps, blood warming pumps, etc. Equipment is disassembled, cleaned, sterilized, reassembled, and tested for proper operation, minor repairs made. Preparation involves all duties required to assemble, package, wrap, and sterilize the medical supply items. The items are packaged individually (e.g. scissors, tubing, gauze) or are assembled into trays and
    sets. Frequently, some items are packaged both individually and as part of a tray or set. Sterilizing the items involves determining the proper sterilizing method, placing the carrier containing the supply items in the sterilizer and operating the sterilizer.

    Qualifications
    BASIC REQUIREMENTS
    • Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3g.)
    • Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or
    • Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or
    • Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
    Preferred Experience: Sterile Processing, Operating Room, or work similar in nature. IAHCSMM Certification preferred.

    Grade Determinations:

    GS-06 :

    For the GS-6 (Full Performance) level you must have at least One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. In addition, you must meet the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings.
  • Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of sterility principles in regards to instrumentation.
  • Ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures.
  • References: VA HANDBOOK 5005/76, PART II, APPENDIX G-47

    The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-06.

    Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, such as, standing for prolonged periods of time, lifting medical supply items weighing more than 25 pounds, pushing medical supply carts weighing up to several hundred pounds, and frequent bending and stretching. The work requires dexterity in such tasks as inserting small rods in needle openings or precisely aligning component parts while reassembling medical equipment.

    On a regular and recurring basis, the employee alternates between a contaminated environment and a carefully controlled cleaned environment. In both, the employees wear special clothing which can be uncomfortably warm. While handling contaminated medical supplies the employee also uses rubber gloves and an apron. The work area is often hot and humid. The employee is subject to slipping on wet floors. The employee often works around body fluids, mucous, excretions, and bits of tissue, some of which may be foul smelling strong, unpleasant orders are encountered while sterilizing laboratory cultures prior to disposal. The work area is noisy due to the clatter of metal instruments, rumbling of carts, and operation of pre-sterilizing equipment.
