As part of Merck’s Future Talent Program, thePharmacology department in Merck Research Laboratories, West Point site invitesapplications for an intern position during the summer of 2019.

The Pharmacology biochemistry and biophysics team islooking for an exceptionally talented and motivated student. Working alongsideexperienced pharmaceutical industry scientists, the successful candidate willcontribute to the discovery of novel drugs.  The primary responsibilities of the group are to develop and executebiochemical and cellular assays to evaluate and characterize drug candidatesfrom neuroscience, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and/or vaccinedevelopment programs. 

The successful candidate will:

  • Executebiochemical and/or cellular assays utilizing different instrumentation
  • Work with industry-standard data analysis tools andrecord keeping, including electronic lab books
  • Communicate data progress at internal meetings; give a verbalpresentation at the completion of training; participate in scientific exchangewith Merck scientists

The position will be located at Merck ResearchLaboratories in West Point, Pennsylvania.

This is a full- time internship position. Housingsubsidy is not available as part of this program and must be funded 100% by thestudent.


  • Required: Candidates must be currently enrolled in a full-time BS/BA degree program in biology, biochemistry or a related scientific discipline.

RequiredExperience and Skills:

  • Candidates must be available to work full-time for up to (12) consecutive weeks beginning in May or June of 2019.
  • Candidatesmust have completed at least (2) college-level courses in biology by May 30,2019.
  • Candidatesmust be able to work independently in a multi-functional, team-orientedenvironment.
  • Candidatesmust possess superior verbal and written communication skills.

PreferredExperience and Skills:

  • Candidates should have previous laboratoryexperience.
  • Candidates should have prior experience withaseptic technique and good cell culture practice.
  • Candidates should have prior experience withassay development.
  • Candidates should  have an understanding of  mechanistic enzymology and enzyme kinetics
  • Candidates should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
