Engineering Project Leader

The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial sectors that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.


Purpose of Position

Position will be responsible for leading technical teams and working with internal customers to execute projects and meet customer requirements in a broad case of optical technologies.


Major Responsibilities (Ongoing Tasks)

  • Project management and leadership, effectively lead multiple and broad ranges of projects
  • Organize projects by defining scope and objectives
  • Develop and lead project budgets and schedules
  • Lead all aspects of project management from Initiation, Planning, Implementation to Control and Closure
  • Lead regular project meetings and reporting updates to key stakeholders
  • Executing required tasks hands-on when required
  • Forecasting capital and expense spending, support the development of project Appropriation Request (AR) as needed
  • Monitors changes in internal and external customer requirements/scope or other assumptions and determines the impact on the project 
  • Works with internal and external customers during each stage to keep them engaged, to manage the scope of the project, and to interpret their perception of the result.
  • Manages the information flow related to project direction, issues, needs, and progress with key project constituencies including internal and external customers and team members.
  • Ensure that safety standards are practiced and met
  • Ensures that intellectual property is protected


Hours of work:

  • Typical first shift production hours, M-F, 40+ hr
  • May require occasional off shift support of production, experiments, project work, other miscellaneous activity


Travel Requirements:

  • < 5%.  May be needed for training, benchmarking or other activity




  • Required: BS in related science or project management
  • Desired: MS in related science,
  • Work experience with optics or physics is a plus

  • Ability to effectively handle a high degree of change and ambiguity

  • Ability to interact with internal and external customers, building strong relationships for success
  • Ability to work cross functionally (commercial, technical, technology) with a focus on manufacturability
  • Able to set project direction using project management tools (ie. MS Project, risk assessment, scope management, etc)

  • Able to make sound decisions by blending analytical thinking with practical judgment.
  • Ability to articulate clear direction and program purpose
  • Communication skills, both formal and informal.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, Project, Word, PowerPoint).
