The Patient Food Service Representative assembles patients’ trays; services/prepares food and snacks, delivers and retrieves trays. Answers telephone calls and receives requests from patients and other hospital staff.  Shows initiative in resolving patient, family member and/or nursing concerns.



  1. Demonstrates excellent customer service when answering telephone calls, assisting patients and family members, and working with hospital staff.  Shows initiative in resolving patient and or nursing concerns independently. Handles multiple and potentially conflicting assignments, demands and priorities.


  2. Prepares patient’s trays according to tray ticker and diet, including morning, afternoon and snacks for assigned areas. Maintains attention to detail over an extended period of time, adapting to varying conditions.


  3. Delivers patient trays and ensures established protocol is followed (i.e., sanitized foam in out, knock and announce delivery, scan ticket to note tray delivery, etc.).  Ensures that tray delivery is correct by comparing patient name and date of birth on patient’s arm band with the tray ticket. Deals effectively and calmly with conflict-related and/or emotional situations.


  4. Sets up on table closest to patient and provides assistance as needed by opening containers, etc.  Notifies nursing staff of any orders requiring additional assistance (Accu-Check, isolation contact, etc.).


  5. Delivers and picks up carts and/or missing items. Cleans and sanitizes equipment as directed (i.e., carts).


  6. Stacks and stores dishes and pots in the dish room and/or pots and pans areas as scheduled. Assists with dish room and sanitation duties.


  7. Prepares, serves and stores food in a safe and sanitary manner ensuring all safety and sanitation procedures are followed in accordance with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) principles.


  8. Observes infection control and food safety practices at all times by maintaining the kitchen and work areas in a clean neat and organized manner in accordance with HACCP standards.


  9. Retrieves trays from all designated area, entering every room, kitchen area, etc. to locate and retrieve soiled trays. Completes tray tickets with percentages eaten and leaves tray ticket in folder for calorie counts.


  10. Ensures work is complete in a safe and sanitary manner by cleaning and sanitizing areas on a daily basis and signing log when completed. Follows all Presence Health and Sodexo regulatory rules and procedures.

    Education and/or Experience  

    High School diploma, GED or equivalent experience preferred.


    Computer Skills          

    Proficient in Microsoft Office software.
