The Lead Systems Developer position entails monitoring, administration, oversight and incremental enhancement of Amtrak’s transportation platform and applications. Daily tasks include responding to change and trouble tickets, monitoring the platform for failures, exceptions and threshold issues, tuning and optimizing applications performance, testing applications for product upgrades and patches, communicating with customers and upper management about platform and/or ticket status, and working on occasional minor enhancements as remaining work capacity allows.
The Lead Systems Developer works on major projects providing subject matter expertise and technical direction and is also responsible for systems analysis, design, development, integration, and enhancement. The Lead Systems Developer works closely with customers, business analysts and team members to understand the business requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technical solutions.  These solutions must be aligned with business and IT strategies and are in compliance with the organization’s architectural standards.

  • Works on projects that may span a broad range of systems. Requires expertise in multiple technical environments and possesses an increased level of business knowledge.
  • Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, the following:
  • Consults in the project planning process with customers, IT business analysts, architects and team members.
  • Organizes and documents technical requirements. Creates technical design specifications and assists in sizing technical requirements.
  • Works with customers to develop and analyze application packages and tools and determine optimum functionality requirements to meet those needs.  
  • Evaluates new application packages and tools.
  • Provides multiple recommendations for the solutions.
  • Evaluates existing applications and platform and provides recommendations for system enhancements by conducting gap analysis, identifying feasible alternative solutions, and assisting in the scope of modifications. 
  • Participates on teams that outline the process and scope out the improvements that can be realized through the application solution.
  • May lead the deployment of new modules, upgrades and fixes.
  • Implements integration plans.  Interfaces with testing teams to incorporate plans into integration testing process.
  • Defines, develops or modifies software application modules or enterprise wide software systems using disciplined development processes.  
  • Identifies better sources of data feeds and interfaces with architects to ensure their feasibility with corporate data warehouse, when needed.
  • Documents functions and changes to new or modified modules, test activities/results and other areas such as error handling and backup/recovery procedures.
  • Adheres to quality standards and procedures.  Reviews modules for quality assurance and checks compliance with application architecture standards and SLAs.  
  • May assist in defining development guidelines and standards to be utilized in software development/integration.
  • Makes modules production-ready by moving them to libraries, completing forms, following procedures, completing version control documents, etc.
  • Provides ongoing maintenance of applications.
  • May produce and analyze data extracts from system based on user requirements.
  • Assists in the development of user guides and training documentation. 
  • Provides technical leadership coaching and mentoring to team members.  Provides technical guidance or system process expertise. 
  • Develops reports and presentations for senior management, as needed.
  • Develop high quality software systems by analyzing requirements, providing technical design, developing software, support testing and deployment.
  • Develop hybrid cross-platform web/mobile applications utilizing AEM Mobile and JavaScript framework. Responsible for developing critical revenue generating customer facing and enterprise web/mobile applications.
  • Responsible for analyzing and bringing in the new technology trends in the industry for the eCommerce ecosystem. Help foster, mentor, coach and develop the technical team to take eCommerce systems to the next level.
  • Provide maintenance support of the applications by troubleshooting and resolving application issues to meet SLA’s and performance requirements.  



  • Extensive experience programming and/or systems analysis experience.  Have a broad level of understanding surrounding information systems and application architecture standards.
  • Perform development of customer enhancements, and maintenance tasks using expertise with SQL Server, Oracle, VB .Net, and SSRS.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform all essential functions. (See above)
  • 7+ years of programming and/or systems analysis experience
  • 5+ years of programming experience using JavaScript frameworks such as JQuery, Angular, Vue.JS, RESTful implementation, CSS, HTML5, Bootstrap, UI/UX design patterns, Ionic, Cordova etc.
  • Extensive experience with developing large scale responsive web / mobile application using Mobile development framework for various screen/device/digital touch point variations.
  • The successful candidate will have proven experience with:
  • Has good understanding of CI/CD & automation using tools such as Jenkins, Docker etc. 
  • Has expertise in hosting applications in Amazon Web Services or Azure cloud technology stack.
  • Proficiency in using Github or Bitbucket, JIRA and Confluence.
  • Have integrated Hybrid Mobile & responsive Web Apps with Adobe Experience Management platform, Adobe analytics tools and AEM contents.
  • Have published mobile applications in Apple App Store and/or Google Playstore.


  • Excellent troubleshooting skills
  • Background in transportation or logistics
  • Knowledge of Amtrak transportation systems such as OTP (on time performance), Operations portal, and Efficiency TESTS
  • Knowledge with Sencha 4 or higher
  • Knowledge with Java
  • Knowledge of Websphere10 
  • Domain knowledge of transportation reservation and eCommerce systems     
  • Has experience or worked with AWS tech stack such as EC2, Redis, Lambda, Kinesis etc. Worked with RDBMS or No SQL databases, such as DynamoDB or MongoDB.
  • Has understanding of the Mobile Application Development Framework such as HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, Ionic, Cordova/PhoneGap etc.
  • Agile development & fast prototyping experience. 



  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, specialized training, certification, or equivalent work experience.



  • Must have leadership skills, experience/in-depth knowledge of business operations and systems requirements processes including ability to measure short- and long-term business goals. 
  • Must possess the skill to educate project team members on business unit goals and objectives and educate the business on the value of information technology.
  • Ability to identify, propose and oversee the execution of business solutions as well as interpret documents communicating business needs and requirements.
  • Must possess the skill to assess the client needs through direct interaction, and identify opportunities to develop the business through effective use of technology. 
  • Willingness to support applications 24 x 7 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week)
  • Must possess the ability to utilize adaptable communication skills to effectively translate between technical and business language.
