The role will provide an opportunity for practitioners with direct knowledge of the Community Legal sector to engage directly with students, impart best practice, and train and advise students who have a keen interest in pro bono work, whilst assisting the Director with the implementation of an ambitious strategic plan.

About This Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced, proactive and energetic Practitioner in Residence to work within the UQ Pro Bono Centre for three months, during semester 2 2025. The successful candidate will be able to anticipate, initiate and manage administrative activities and be adept at working both autonomously and as part of a small high-performing team.

The role requires exceptional communication and organisational skills, an impeccable attention to detail and the ability to prioritise activities and tasks to meet deadlines.

For practitioners there is an opportunity to work with a nationally recognised leader in the development, promotion, and provision of student pro bono services, and to work with a widely published researcher and Director of the Pro Bono Centre whose work examines the impact of the law on vulnerable people and the influence the law has on complex social problems.

This is a fixed-term position (1 FTE) at HEW level 7, reporting to the Director, UQ Pro Bono Centre. Commencing in June 2025, the position is intended to act as a 3-month sabbatical for practitioners who work in community legal, Legal Aid or pro bono legal settings.

It provides an opportunity for practitioners to support and mentor students and contribute to the projects of the UQ Pro Bono Centre.

At HEW level 7, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $100,554 - $109,496, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $117,648.51 - $128,110.86 annually.

About You

  • Must hold a law degree and be admitted to practice as a legal practitioner in Australia.
  • Knowledge of community law, public interest research and pro bono work in Queensland and Australia.
  • Strong commitment to social justice and pro bono work.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring students, volunteers or junior lawyers to develop their practical legal skills.
  • High-level personal work ethic.
  • Ability to prioritise own workload, work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to establish collaborative relationships and to represent the Pro Bono Centre at a university and wider community level, including industry, government and professional bodies.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, creativity and judgement.
  • Commitment to upholding the University’s values, and with the outstanding personal qualities of openness, respectfulness and integrity.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, criminal check, education check etc.
