Working arrangements: Applicants will preferably perform the role at the AEC National Office in Canberra. Hybrid working arrangements (i.e. a combination of onsite attendance at an AEC office and remote working) will be considered at the discretion of the hiring manager.

Length of contract: Until 30 June 2026

Contract extensions: 2x 12 months

Security clearance: Must have a Baseline clearance

Rates: $100 - $120 per hour (inc. super)

With the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC), the Indigo Program is a large-scale transformation program to modernise business capabilities and replace core election ICT systems with a citizen-centric, agile technology platform. The Program will transform the AEC’s delivery of electoral services and ensure ongoing integrity of the electoral system. Tranche 2 comprises a variety of work packages with a focus on business process re-engineering, data management, legislative compliance and replacing aging systems.

The AEC is seeking an Azure Cloud Automation Engineer who will focus on managing and improving the AEC’s system infrastructure, such as on-premises server and storage systems, multi-cloud infrastructure, Office 365 applications, AEC’s Standard Operating Environments and end user device management. Reporting to the Assistant Director IT Infrastructure, this role will assist the infrastructure team to deliver positive outcomes for matters relating to the management and support of AEC infrastructure and systems.

This is an exciting opportunity to make a significant contribution to the delivery of electoral events and operations through an improved maturity of AEC’s systems.

Key duties and responsibilities:

This role will be responsible for, but not limited to:

• In partnership with the rest of the infrastructure team/s, provide systems expertise to enhance and improve existing solutions, including designing, developing, implementing, and testing solutions, in line with business requirements and software development standards;
• Collaborating with other teams in the work area, investigating and resolving complex issues with the operation of infrastructure and infrastructure as code;
• Ensuring deadlines are consistently met and that a high standard of technical and design documentation is provided;
• Contributing to the re-architecture of platforms and migration projects to move AEC systems to cloud;
• Assisting the application development teams with the development and maintenance of DevOps continuous integration (CI) and continuous deployment (CD) pipelines;
• Defining, developing and documenting the existing automation technologies to enhance the system’s build, test and deployment capabilities;
• Contributing to providing On-call support for AEC infrastructure and systems;
• Perform additional duties or assume responsibility of functions as directed from time to time.

Essential Criteria

1. Demonstrated extensive experience working within IT Infrastructure working in hybrid cloud and on-premise environments and experience in virtualization, cloud computing, and storage technologies.
2. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across all levels and manager key stakeholders.
3. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in deploying, testing, and maintaining an enterprise sized ICT environment.
4. Demonstrated knowledge of risk management principles and processes in context of security patch management and infrastructure management.
5. Demonstrated experience in the development and maintenance of DevOps continuous integration (CI) and continuous deployment (CD) pipelines.

Desirable Criteria

1. Proven understanding of ITIL, TOGAF concepts with a focus on Incident, Problem and Change Management and knowledge of the Commonwealth frameworks, including the PSPF and ISM.
