The Position
As a Clinical Coder, you are required to assign accurate and timely clinical codes to episodes of care through analysis of clinical documentation using the ICD-10-AM ACHI 12th edition classification systems and applying the Australian and State Coding Standards.
Troubleshoot and problem solve issues relating to the clinical coding function, making coding decisions in consultation with the Australian Coding Standards and Hospital guidelines. Some coding decisions may require escalation to the Coding Manager. The incumbent is expected to liaise with appropriate staff to achieve a resolution.
Participate in and contribute to quality activities in relation to coded data and the collection of quality health data.
- Certificate qualified in either Certificate IV in Clinical Classification or Diploma of Clinical Coding to be classified as a Clinical Coder
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Demonstrated aptitude for problem solving and understanding unclear documentation within the medical record
- Strong attention to detail and an ability to stay focused for extended periods of time
- Ability to be team-focused and work independently
- Results-driven, innovative and resourceful attitude
- Prefer minimum of 2 years’ experience within a hospital setting
You will make an impact by:
- Performing clinical coding at a high level, covering a broad Casemix.
- Using appropriate initiative, judgement and resources such as the Australian and State Coding Standards.
- Ensuring the correct assignment and sequencing of Australian ICD – 10 AM codes and appropriate DRG assignment
- Undertaking research as required to assist in making informed judgements relating to clinical documentation, code assignment and application of the National and State Coding Standards
- Ability to work with limited supervision and demonstrate a commitment to learning and development in various areas of the role.
- Actively contributing to a safe and equitable workplace by utilising safe work practices and following policies and procedures
