Position Profile
Welcome to Fiona Stanley Hospital, Perth, Western Australia. The Fellowship in Emergency Medicine is a 12-month fellowship program open to Emergency Physicians eligible for medical registration in Western Australia.
Based at Fiona Stanley Hospital, this position is for recently qualified Emergency Specialists or final year Emergency Medicine trainees who are seeking additional training and experience in high acuity emergency care.

The Fellowship is a focused clinical experience devoted to developing acute skills in Emergency Medicine. Alongside senior clinicians, the Fellow will be responsible for leading medical teams within the ED and will be the senior medical co-ordinator in the department overnight. The fellowship aims to provide a comprehensive experience in all aspects of adult and paediatric emergency care including high acuity priority 1 presentations, emergency procedures, complex medical and transplant patients, and acute surgical patients including trauma. Fellows will also develop key leadership and management skills gaining firsthand experience in co-ordinating a large department out of hours, including staffing allocation, receiving incoming transfers, and providing advice to country services.
Fellows will be encouraged to supervise and teach the junior doctors within the department and participate in quality improvement and audit. Research is encouraged but not essential. The fellow will also be expected to participate in weekly consultant led education sessions. There are opportunities to pursue special interests with active ultrasound, simulation, education, and toxicology units within the department. We also offer sub-speciality training in geriatric emergency medicine through our unique model of care.
About Us
Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) is a 783-bed tertiary hospital offering a range of health services including the State Adult Burns Service, a comprehensive cancer centre, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatric and neonatal services, and the State Rehabilitation Service. The hospital also delivers specialised services such as advanced heart and lung disease including transplant surgery, a 24h angiography service complemented by an ECMO capable Intensive care unit, and hyperbaric medicine.
The Emergency Department is a 70-bed unit including a 15-bed resuscitation area and a separate 15-bed paediatric area. It is one of the busiest emergency departments in Australia and sees 110,000 patients per year; 25% are paediatric presentations. The department is staffed by 60 consultants and 35 (Full time equivalent) local trainees or equivalent grade doctors working a shift pattern. Overnight the department is led by a senior registrar with consultant support as required.
We are a pro-active department that manages a very high acuity caseload with over 1800 priority 1 ambulances per year. Our emergency staff independently perform 225 intubations, 70 central lines, over 450 procedural sedations and reduce over 300 major joints or fractures per year. We have an active training program for emergency medicine trainees delivered by academic staff with university affiliations and national positions within the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine.
