Applicant lists may be screened more than once.The New Mexico Department of Transportation's (NMDOT) North Regional Division (NRD) provides project development, technical design, and design oversight for projects in District Four (4) and District Five (5). Working alongside NMDOT General Office (GO) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) personnel, the North Region Division advances NMDOT projects through both internal design efforts and consultant oversight. The NRD is also provides oversight on local agency projects that use federal funding for design and construction activities. The North Region Division is based out of the Santa Fe NMDOT General Office and is comprised of professional engineers, technicians, and administrative support staff.As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government. Why does the job exist?This position exists to assist the Project Development Engineer (PDE) with better performance-based results, as defined in the current NMDOT/FHWA Stewardship and Oversight Agreement. The position will assist in production of quality plans, on schedule, within budget, and per design criteria established by state and federal guidelines. Other duties include contract administration, as directed by the PDE, pertaining to negotiated engineering contracts, as well as maintaining contact with NMDOT support personnel during construction of assigned projects. How does it get done?Key responsibilities of this position will include:- Communicate with the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) North Region Design (NRD) employees and support units throughout NMDOT. Coordinate and communicate with the NMDOT District personnel. - Gather preliminary design information for project development and scope, allowing timely completion of project-related tasks.- Suggest design alternatives to improve project constructability within identified budget during milestone inspections. Provide project designs that meet current highway and bridge design standards (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Roadside Design Guide, etc.).- Assist in preparation of project schedules for all assigned projects. Assist with development of project scope and scoping report with partners (NMDOT District and General office staff, FHWA, Planning Organizations, Tribal and Local Agencies, other stakeholders as needed). Assist with development of preliminary estimate for use by NMDOT Districts in determining funding to be programmed.- Assist with management of consultant tasks to ensure projects are completed on time and on-budget. Coordinate consultant work review with other sections within the department. Ensure consultants follow applicable state and federal design standards as defined in negotiated contracts.- Other tasks as required at NRD. Who are the customers?Project design for the NMDOT NRD, District Four (4), and District Five (5). Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate will have preferred experience and/or education in the following areas:* Professional Engineer (PE) License in Civil Engineering as certified by the New Mexico Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Professional Surveyors (NMBLPEPS). * Providing project designs that meet current highway and bridge design standards.* Preparation of Primavera P6 project schedules for all assigned projects.* Management of consultant tasks to ensure projects are completed on time and on budget. Minimum QualificationBachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and four (4) years of engineering experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be licensed by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire. Employment RequirementsMust possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results. Working ConditionsWork is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Field work is also required in varying weather conditions-hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, concrete powder, and environmental allergens; exposure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles; high volume traffic; insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, and stressful situations; interaction with public, local, county, school, and city officials by phone and in person; work is performed in the field, monthly assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays away from post of duty along with extended hours and occasional travel. Sitting/Standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
