As a leader in the retail market, we’re optimistic about our future and yours. We’re relentless in our pursuit of results but are also changing rapidly, providing you with challenging work that you’ll be proud of. We celebrate your uniqueness and individuality. Because at Kmart, it’s not just what you do, but who you are that makes every day brighter.

What you’ll be doing

As a collaborative & driven designer, you will work closely with our Buying team to create fantastic products that bring memorable moments into our customers' lives. We are seeking a creative and skilled Designer for a 12-month FTC, specializing in both softgoods and hardgoods for our nursery and toy product lines. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in illustration, print design, and product development, with a keen eye for detail and a passion for creating engaging and functional products. This is an exciting opportunity to help grow our Toys & Nursery space and make a significant impact.

As a designer at Kmart, you will identify, interpret, and implement global market trends to grow sales through appealing everyday products.

Your day may also include:

  • Trend forecasting (new product opportunities, range extensions & aesthetics – print/pattern/key icons)
  • Range building – collaborating with the merchandise team to develop a commercial range and architecture
  • Compliance – adhering to Kmart's intellectual property requirements and processes
  • End-to-end product development – creating desirable and affordable products with customer safety and quality in mind, from initial sketches to final production, including soft goods (textiles, plush toys) and hard goods (plastic toys, furniture)
  • Creating illustrations and print designs aligned with our brand's aesthetic and values
  • Working with suppliers, manufacturers, and QA teams to ensure safety and quality standards
  • Presenting design concepts and prototypes for stakeholder feedback and approval
  • Reviewing sales data to understand product performance and inform future range decisions

To be successful in this role:

We’re looking for a passionate and enthusiastic individual with a curious mindset and a love for retail. You enjoy delivering products with customers front of mind and excel at building and managing relationships with key stakeholders.

We'd also love you to have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Design, Fine Arts, or a related field, with proven experience in designing soft and hard goods, preferably in retail
  • Strong illustration and print design skills
  • High proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)
  • Excellent understanding of product development processes and materials
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and communicate clearly
  • Strong attention to detail and a passion for high-quality products
  • Previous experience in product development (nursery & toys experience is highly desirable but not essential)
  • Ability to forecast and implement trends with broad appeal
  • Skill in creating accurate technical specification drawings
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and communication skills
  • Confident presentation skills with meticulous attention to detail

If you are a talented designer passionate about creating beautiful and functional products, we’d love to hear from you! Please submit your resume, portfolio, and a cover letter outlining your relevant experience.
