Scope of Work

Broaden and extend Corning Inc.’s competency in the field of cleanroom and washing system design, development, characterization and implementation to plant manufacturing systems. To design a clean / wash process system that delivers pristine glass to subsequent process operations that reduces particles, organic materials at designed cycle time. During installation of the systems at a manufacturing location, be proactive in the propagation of precision engineering principles and practices within Corning. In addition, this position will also be responsible for providing technical support during manufacturing start up and during product qualification process. The individual will provide engineering guidance to the product / process development and manufacturing teams to demonstrate improved glass sheet quality. Function in a high performance manufacturing and engineering environment. The person is expected to have broad technical skills and experience as well as strong interpersonal skills to work with people of diverse cultural and technical background in worldwide locations of Corning Incorporated. In addition, to ensure and complete Job Safety Analyses for new process introductions.

 

Scope of Position

• Identify cleaning/washing equipment systems for various glass processing functions that deliver pristine glass quality

• Identify environmental requirements that sustain glass quality requirements and meet customer specifications.

• Responsible to determine operations required to produce products and develop processes in a cleanroom environment to ensure that quality, cost and efficiency requirements are met.

• Identify defect root causes and factor into design requirements

• Work with equipment suppliers to design wash systems to improve glass surface quality

• Ensure measurement/inspection system meet the customer’s needs

• Improve processes and solve problems based on fundamental understanding gained through the use of the scientific method

• Applying DMAIC and advanced statistical tools

• Improve manufacturing cost, quality, uptime, yields, cycle time, and safety

• Evaluate new materials, new equipment, or new process parameters

• Documenting SOP, SOS, experiment planning, and process changes

 

Day to Day Responsibilities

• Interface with Development and Engineering Teams to design and develop washing / cleaning systems for AI process requirements.

• Interface with Development and Plant Engineering to develop and lead production trials of new products, processes, and technology.

• Provide technical guidance and subject matter expertise in glass cleaning fundamentals

• Support technology assessments of glass cleaning concepts based on fundamental science, and apply the fundamentals and engineering principles to eliminate glass defects

• Design and implement key process experiments and document.

• Engage in the manufacturing process development work including experiment planning, data analysis & reporting results.

• Collaborate with Development groups in advancing fundamental understanding & evaluating new process and/or product ideas.

• Lead scale-up and transfer of feasible technologies to manufacturing.

• Manage cross functional teams and apply traditional project management methodologies of performance.

• Interact with Development and Manufacturing Teams to determine product and process requirements.

• Identify low cost manufacturing opportunities that maintain the specified quality level.

• Design and develop new processes or improve existing processes

• Use hands-on approach to solve problems and improve processes based on fundamental understanding and structured problem solving methods such as KT, Designed Experimentation, or Six Sigma

• Implement Process Control and Process Discipline systems into manufacturing operations

• Analyze process data using statistical tools (e.g. pareto, regression, time charting, analysis of variance, gauge R&R, etc.)

• Measure and communicate performance against established objectives

• Review and interpret data to make recommendations on immediate actions, long term corrective actions, follow-up experiments, etc.

• Document processes and train operators and peers on defined processes

 

Role within the group

• Identify low cost cleaning / washing solutions and environmental control for new facilities

• Provide measurement tools to monitor glass and environmental conditions

• Individual will be responsible for participating on cross-functional project teams, on early innovation stage projects, through concept generation/certification, technology development, detail design/build, and start-up in pilot or high volume manufacturing .

• High level of fundamental understanding of the process and materials to enable the development of cost effective products and finishing machine systems.

• Able to effectively leverage external machine builders and system integrators for detail design, build, and integration of later stages of machine system implementation.

• Be responsible for the functional and operational integrity of design, estimating costs, defining project scope, budget and schedule.

• Be responsible for identification of project resources necessary to complete the project tasks and coordinate the project team’s efforts towards successfully achieving overall project objectives.

• Procure, implement and document systems and assist in training operational personnel.

 

Required Skills

• Share knowledge of all cleanroom mechanical systems including make-up air, exhaust, process vacuum, compressed air, jacket cooling water, and fire protection.

• Solid understanding of cleanroom air managements systems including VLF and turbulent flow rooms in 3 level fabs with both open and closed waffle slabs; understand entire process of conditioning cleanroom air including make-up air handler and filtration, temperature and humidity control, room pressurization, and fan-filter units; insure cleanrooms are balanced and certified to the proper specification.

• Understand the fundamentals and equipment requirements of glass sheet washing systems used in other businesses to achieve desired glass quality

• Technical Interface between Corning, and OEM automation suppliers to insures Corning success on New Business Development programs

Travel Requirements

• Estimate travel up to 40% depending upon specific project assignment. Travel may be required during installation, debug, and start-up as well as for routine interaction with Customers and Suppliers. This would be a combination of domestic and international travel. International travel would most commonly be to Asia or Europe.

 

Education and Experience

• B.S./M.S./PhD in Technical Discipline

• Minimum 2-5 years of cleanroom / clean process experience

  • Process, Equipment, Product Development or Engineering
  • Technology or Product Transfer (preferred)
  • Glass cleaning /washing equipment and cleanroom design experience (preferred)
