Position Summary:

HARMAN’s diverse portfolio of businesses and customers offer interns a great opportunity to gain exposure to a wide range of projects and practices. As a member of our team, your primary role will be to contribute your engineering expertise to turn concepts of future user experience into a working prototype. You will be joining the Future Experience (FX) Team at HARMAN. We are a fast paced, start-up-feel group of talented inventors, engineers, researchers, and designers. We are located in Mountain View, California, minutes away from Google, Samsung, the NASA campus, and many others right in the heart of Silicon Valley. Reporting directly to the CTO of Harman, the team aims to be the most forward-thinking group in the company, and is focused on Future User Experiences (UX) and Artificial Intelligence, connecting the dots between cutting edge technologies and deep research, and rapid end-to-end prototyping. Every day, we challenge ourselves to turn Science Fiction into reality.

 

This internship will focus on the creation of 3D content to be used in the FX Team’s existing Augmented Reality (AR) projects and prototypes. The emphasis will be on modeling, mapping UVs, and texturing the created content to be dropped straight into a game engine. An ability to understand the desired experience achieved by the AR system, and a holistic thinking perspective are a must. Along with the creation of content for AR systems, you will take on the task of creating virtual prototypes of inventions and ideas not yet implemented by the FX Team.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Work closely with FX Team members to brainstorm the best content for each AR system
  2. Create 3D content, including models with UV layout, textures and lighting
  3. Create simulations / particle work if necessary
  4. Render high-quality concepts of future FX Team products

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's Degree program in Sophomore year or later, or graduate/Ph.D. program at an accredited institution taking at least one class in the semester prior to the internship program and returning to school for at least one semester upon completion of the internship program
  • Degree must be in related area of work with courses in art & design, animation, industrial design, media arts, 3D graphics, computer science, or any related field
  • Strong working knowledge of a 3D modeling software such as Maya, Blender, Zbrush, or similar
  • Familiar with animation workflow
  • Experience creating textures within Photoshop or similar software
  • A portfolio detailing your work
  • Previous entry level work experience strongly preferred
  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills and be able to confidently interact and present information to senior leaders
  • Must work collaboratively with strong interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Must provide work availability from May 31, 2018 - August 12, 2018 and be able to work 40 hours per week
  • Strongly prefer candidates who live within a commutable distance
  • Must provide own housing and transportation to/from work
  • Must provide proper work authorization

 

Preferred Qualifications & Desired Competencies:

  • MFA
  • UX knowledge related to virtual interfaces
  • Experience implementing 3D assets into game engines (Unity 3D)
  • Programming/scripting knowledge of a relevant language (C#, JavaScript)
  • A portfolio highlighting hard surface modeling
