Optical Physicist / Engineer - Advanced Optics

Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

• Innovates on and invents new optical solutions for imaging and non-imaging optical systems

• Explores optimization strategies that enable new levels of system performance

• Develops detailed knowledge and understanding for key component requirements that can enable new systems and performance e.g. freeforms and diffractive solutions

• Provides detailed analyses of the design tolerances and impact on performance including various methods of optical modeling including real component measurements and building proof of concept models

• Works closely with the engineering and manufacturing functions to prototype new ideas and transfers them into manufacturing using Corning’s innovation process

• Executes required modeling and experiments as part of development programs and projects. Location of this position will be either Fairport, NY or Corning, NY

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Develops knowledge and understanding of current and future optical system and component requirements

• Develops intellectual property and patents related to new technologies • Executes required modeling and experimentation activities.

• Communicate results to management/steering teams and technology receivers

• Lead or participate on teams to support project and department objectives

• Provide direction to other team members as necessary

 

Travel Requirements (please note if international): Regular travel within New York state, domestic travel required occasional international travel.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40+, flex-time

 

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess)

1. Strong knowledge and experience working in physical optics and computational physics (Raytracing, RCWA, Physical Beam Propagation, …)

2. Able to bridge between ideal/theory and practical/what we make and define the most viable design path forward

3. Applied system thinking approach to problem solving

4. Working experience with industry-standard numerical tools used in optical design and physics modeling, e.g., CodeV, Zemax, Lighttools or similar, OptiLayer, TFCalc or similar, GSolver, PCGrate or similar, Optiwave Optisys, Comsol, Lumerical, or similar

5. Strong analytical and modeling skills, including corresponding computational skills, Experience in programming custom solutions and extensions (Python, MATLAB, …)

6. Strong optical experimentation and laboratory skills.

7. Drives to results with minimal supervision.

 

Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess)

1. Experience and knowledge of detailed optical system design and fabrication.

2. Experience and knowledge interacting with international customers/partners.

3. Experience managing across and interacting with multi-site/multi-organization teams.

 

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration)

1. Ph.D. or M.S. required, Optical Science/Physics preferred, will consider EE and Physics Degrees as well.

2. At least 5 years of industrial R&D experience

1. Organized with good planning and time management skills

2. Self-starter; requires minimal supervision

3. Ability to build relationships within cross functional groups; team building skills

4. Positive attitude, flexible and committed work ethic
